Does anybody know why there is basically no Google Streetview in Athens? Only a handful of roads have it and Richland is the only one on the Ohio campus. It might be the only place in the country left without streetview. I can see tiny little towns in the New Mexico desert but I can't see Ohio University. What gives?

They've only done main roads in Athens for whatever reason, and they no longer take requests for updates. I would guess it will eventually cover all of Athens, but Athens County is not on their current schedule.

Thanks for the info. Such a bummer they didn't get any of the university when they did Athens the first time.

I've wondered the same thing. Athens proper isn't exactly Times Square but it also is a bit more established than some places.

I would imagine there are many alums who would LOVE this feature.

+1,000,000!!

Funny thing is, I thought I was the only person who tried using Google Maps' Streetview on Athens! Guess not.

Extra points if Streetview captures the Can Man or 2-Liter Guy.

This is a national scandal. It reports that they are currently driving Butler County, the home of that suckiest of all schools. The shame of it all!

I was on I-75 driving South to Cincinnati on the 20th and saw the Google streetview car getting off the highway at the Middletown exit.

Seriously! Imagine them driving Court Street on a Friday or Saturday night... That'd be awesome.

I now reveal myself as a low-tech guy but not afraid to ask this question: How does the Google streetview car operate?

The same way your car operates: an internal combustion engine :)

In seriousness though, Google pays people to drive around with cameras mounted on top of the car. The cameras take photos that overlap slightly so they can be stitched together into a 360 degree view. Every few years they repeat the process to update the imagery.
