One of the better threads I've read on here in awhile. This is BA at its best.

Always wished for an 18 hole course in Athens. But I understand it would be tough to get someone to step up for that kind of cash especially in a more rural area with 7-8 month golf season max. They would have a virtual monopoly over the market though.

I'll add a new housing development to the mix at the ridges.

University Estates is simply too expensive.

A hotel. A golf course. And a large development with 4 bedroom homes in the $200K-$350K (Athens area pricing) range in family friendly (ie sidewalks, etc.). If not the Ridges.... somewhere....

While you are at it, how about some jobs to support a large development of homes in that price range.

Well if we're just using the Ridges to fulfill our wildest dreams, how about a major comprehensive cancer research center (that as one of its first actions gives me a professorship) in addition to the housing development, hotel, and gold course

I have always thought Athens could move in the direction of a town like Asheville, and cater to/attract retirees. With the baby boomers growing the retiree ranks at a rapid pace(the Silver Tsunami), perhaps some alums would return to live out their golden years. It would take coordination and planning on many levels, but it could be done. The Ridges could serve as a catalyst.

Could not agree more. Some of the top things that retirees look for are:1) quality healthcare, 2) accessibility of an airport for travel, 3) volunteer opportunities, 4) educational/cultural opportunities, 5) dining options, 6) recreational opportunities, and 7) shopping. Athens is very strong in a few of these areas where Asheville has them all. It doesn't hurt that Asheville has the Biltmore which is a huge tourist draw.

The Nelsonville Bypass really helps in areas 1 and 2. Being that much closer to both the airport and healthcare in Cbus really brings it all together for Athens.

I don't think reality has set in for many on how easy of a drive 33 is from Athens to Cbus. I think many who haven't been to Athens in awhile would be shocked when they make it from Court Street to Columbus in an hour and change.

An airport 1:20 away isn't easy access. As for health care, even though the fine folks in Athens do a good job, we aren't even a low level trauma center.
