The Stones also did a nice job of opening their concert with Hang on Sloopy.

Typically see Springsteen when he visits Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Columbus. The venue I least look forward to is Columbus despite it being almost 2 hours closer than others. The reason being I know he's going to play Hang on Sloopy with the requisite O-H-I-O chant from the sheep.

That's what the local news said when they showed the clip of the concert.
I was surprised that they showed over 1 minute of the song on our local news broadcast.

That song becomes much more tolerable when you replace the word Sloopy with Rufus.

Interesting that our "state" song was written by two guys born in NYC, first recorded by a African American group from CA and made famous by a group from Indiana that included Rick Derringer. Lots of connections to Ohio.

Yes, Rick Zehringer grew up in Union City, IN -- right across the border -- but he was born in Ft. Recovery. The McCoys and the predecessor bands he was in were based in southwestern Ohio. They played around Dayton frequently and also gigged in other parts of the region on a regular basis. Someone told me that they opened for the Rolling Stones when they played Cincinnati in the 1960s, but I don't know if that's correct.

Edit -- If I had my wish, though, our state rock/pop song would be something by the Ohio Players. Dozens of great tunes from which to choose. Dayton-based and proud. Southwestern Ohio is arguably the funk capital of the world with OP, Lakeside, Dayton, Slave, Sun, Steve Arrington, Roger Troutman and Zapp all from Dayton. Members of Heatwave had Dayton/Springfield roots.Bootsy Collins is from the Hamilton/Cincinnati area. Same for the Isley Brothers, The Deele and Midnight Star. Some of the guys in George Clinton's band had Dayton roots. . And, I probably left a few off the list! Lots of great R&B and funk bands/artists. Many others from other parts of Ohio.

If I could have nominated a song on the ballot (well, there was no "ballot" - just bucknut lobbyist) - I would have gone with "Love Rollercoaster"/The Ohio Players. We are the rollercoaster capital of the world ya know (Cedar Point & King's Island)

Hang on Sloopy is the state song? That just sounds weird. Was this a case of OSU doing their thing with it and it becoming popular, and then the state going "hey we should make it the state song because blah blah Buckeyes football blah blah!"

The McCoys, who made "Hang on Sloopy" famous as a #1 hit, were from Ohio. Of course, it became even more famous because of Ohio State. Both were reasons cited for adopting it as the state song.

Fun to watch!I have a digital recording of Love Rollercoaster live from a show in Atlanta where OP do a call and response with the letters O-H-I-O (not: OH...IO) and then the band finishes up by singing the word Ohio over and over. Outstanding. And, I've always thought the 110 would do a killer version of this live recording themselves.

BTW -- Sugarfoot Bonner brought a four piece band to perform at SpringFest in 1984. Two guitars, a bass and drums. Smokin' hot set which included many OP tunes. Unbelievable energy and even people who weren't funk fans were up and moving. Got to watch from backstage. 1984 as I recall -- I think Paul Young was the headliner that year.

And a little more information and a correction. This song is not the official song of the state of Ohio - it's the official rock song. Also, I feel sory for those poor people who go to Cleveland pro games.

My favorite memory of the tune is Royal Crescent Mob playing it at The Union 85/86ish. David Ellison, vocalist for RC Mob, mowed Sugars yard when he was a kid in Dayton. They tore up OP's "Fire", and opened shows with a Heavy Pounding Funk/Rock version of James Browns' "Payback". One of the best bands to ever play in the Union. They were ahead of their time in some ways - kinda "Kid Rock" before Kid Rock. Happy Chichester still plays around Columbus post "Howlin' Maggie" years.

Love this thread. One of my classmates was with Ohio Players http://www.gerlachproductions.com/coppermine/displayimage... back in the day. Still playing at class reunions and festivals. Isn't very hard to pick Gary out of the band.

SWO is a heck of a music scene for sure. Loved reading this as I learned something new.
