Akron will be in the NCAA soccer championship game on Sunday. Though it's the Zips, they are a MAC team so I gotta give them props. They rang up five goals on Michigan State in the semis.

I think we'll see soccer attendance increasing over the next decade, Atlanta United had a number of 70k+ games this year and averaged 50k+. Ok, maybe we won't see the Big House filled, but I'm willing to bet that in 10 years MLS will average the second most fans per game in American professional sports behind the NFL, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the fandom trickle down into the NCAA.

Big House was filled this past Spring. 101,254 saw Liverpool defeat Manchester in April.

Your skepticism is fair, but a whole lot has changed since the last century. Here are a few trends it futbol's favor:

- The ethnic makeup of the country is considerably different now.
- Baseball has declined precipitously in popularity and participation.
- Traumatic brain injury has become an unresolved existential threat to football.
- Cable/streaming has provided live, consistent access to the world's best soccer leagues and teams, creating millions of new viewing fans in the U.S.

You can bet against soccer and you might win, but it doesn't look like a safe bet to me.

I agree. The only time I really got into Futbol was when Iceland was making its run a few years ago in the European games. The upset of England was a "game for the ages" and the "greatest upset in football history" as the talking heads opined after the game. But, to be truthful, it was exciting to me only because I'm half-Icelandic, and it was ethnic pride not the inherent excitement of what you call Euro-Kickball that made me sit on the edge of my seat rooting on the team from the motherland.

I said it before and I’ll say it again; American football’s Golden Age is over and done. Within 40 years, maybe sooner, soccer will be a far more popular sport with far more TV revenue than football. Not than I’m happy about that.

As I've posted before,I played soccer for O.U.,back when they had men's soccer.

I loved playing.

Watching a game,that's another story.

I'll "surf" games during the World Cup,but that's about it.

Soccer has some exciting moments,but overall,the game moves a bit to slowly for me.

I mean,its hard to get into a game where you time a "fast break" with a calendar.

Yep, and the top 3 are all outdoor sports which have larger venues to allow for viewership. NBA and NHL are constrained by the size of venue. Apples to Oranges.

In TV viewership, MLS is 5th of 5 in both viewership and revenue. But hey.
