There's a college fair in Niles. Seventy-Five colleges, including every Ohio public four-year university except one, are showing up. Guess who can't be bothered to show up. I'd bet they'd be there with bells on if it were Niles, Illinois though. The state should seriously just cut that place loose. Let them go private (after they pay back the state the value of all their land and buildings to spread around to the rest of the system). They think they'd become Denison when, in reality, they wouldn't last five years.

Too many poors in the Youngstown area for Miami's liking. Much better to spend their resources trolling the Chicago suburbs for preppy kids who didn't get into Big Ten schools.

Birthplace of William McKinley!

Niles itself isn't great, but there's a chance people from places like Boardman or Poland would come.

The way some are infatuated by Miami is more than a little mind boggling to me. I don't care what kind of students they recruit, where they recruit etc. I believe I related here some time ago a story that took place at work. It seemed more than a few in the discussion thought it was a private institution with an endowment rivaling that of Ohio State. When I informed the group that they are a public school and their endowment is less than ours, I think they thought I was making it up.

Fortunately there are a lot of folks that are now talking about our Medical College, especially with the new campuses in Columbus and Cleveland and the associations with premier medical institutions. I prefer to do what we do best and don't really care what they do or don't do.

I think you answered your own question. We need to counter their relentless "public ivy" propaganda. Get the word out that they're no different than us and shouldn't be put on some kind of pedestal.

It's no better here in Michigan. The other day I noticed a Fiami propaganda poster on the wall outside my kid's parochial high school guidance counselor's office. (He didn't go to Fiami.)

I would guess this has more to do with politics than any sincere reevaluation of priorities on Miami's part. As they push towards 50% out of state students, I'd guess there's some rumblings atound the statehouse.

Anyone know if Ohio does anything similar?

Assuming that college fair is sanctioned by the Ohio Association of College Admissions Counselors, Miami and every 4 year college in Ohio should attend that fair. I'm sure they have a representative who oversees the Youngstown area. Having worked in our own admissions office, I know that sometimes, there are college fairs in Ohio that we would not attend as they were not on the OACAC calendar.

How I feel about Miami is summed up in my favorite scene in Casablanca:

Peter Lorre as Ugarte: "Rick, you despise me, don't you"?

Humphrey Bogart as Rick: "I suppose if I gave you any thought, I would".

I'm not seeing anything similar coming from Ohio.

https://www.ohio.edu/admissions/tuition/ohio-signature-aw...

In fact, it looks like the only full tuition scholarships we give are for some students in the Honors Tutorial.

It does look like OSU has been doing this for some time, and Miami copied their "land grant scholarship" though OSU offers two for each county and covers the full cost of attendance not just tuition, so Miami comes in second once again. Good for Miami for doing this though, but I stand by my contention that it has a lot more to do with political relations than with any commitment to Ohio residents.

I wasn't inclined to see if any other state schools are doing anything similar, but I doubt it.

Not sure if it is still a full tuition scholarship--but I received full tuition from 2006 to 2010 as an Appalachian Scholar:

There is merit aid for having a high ACT score which can largely pay for tuition but to be honest the real cost these days is in the room and board and the dorms are a money maker for the university.

Which would be why we are now renting empty dorms on weekends.
