No idea about the answer to either question, rpbobcat. It's possible that someone at the Southeast Ohio History Center knows the answer. I'll try to remember to ask when I have the chance.

Sorry, I misread your earlier post, and therefore missed the sarcasm. I missed the "your" by reading too quickly. I think you must have been talking to me children, who think I was a personal friend of General Sherman's.

Wow, OCF, that’s a great photo! Never seen that one before. I have heard that this hotel was far ahead of its time as it appears to have your shuttle to the game parked right out front!

Now, a question for you, though this picture probably predates the start of OHIO football, let's assume that it was taken a decade later in the 1890s: Where was the stadium that the shuttle would take me and my lovely wife to so that we could see the OHIO-Marietta grudge match?

[This is not a trick question. There is actually some debate as to the location of the first football field. I have a theory where it was, based on an interview I did years ago with the widow of Charles G. O'Bleness, the first football team manager. I'm just curious, since you are such a fount of information about all things OHIO athletics, if you might know the actual location.]

Well to my knowledge it was the area on South Green where the Rugby fields are now, but I am not definitive on that and open to learn something. I know Athens High played there.

Well, BTC, here's what I know, some of this is more documented than others. From Mrs. O'Bleness' description, it sounded like the field in the 1890s was where the Athens High School field was back in my day, behind McCracken Hall, to the right of the old Putnam Elementary playgrounds as you face toward Mill Street. By early in the 20th Century until Peden was built in 1929 (called Ohio Stadium at the time), the football field was where Porter Hall now stands. In my youth, the stadium at that location was used for baseball.

Now, a question for the geezers on this board who also happen to be townies: Anyone else a member of the Knothole Club for OHIO baseball back in the day?

In the late 80s, there used to be remnants of an old football stadium behind Siegfried Hall, which I assume is the one you're talking about. If I remember right, it was an old concrete set of grand stands. Don't know if it's still there. I assume not.

From Mrs. O'Bleness' description it may also have been the site of the first Ohio University football field. She was getting up in years when I interviewed her and some of her descriptions were a little hard to follow, but to the best I could understand her that seemed to be what she was saying.

When I talked with her she showed me a number of photos of football players, in uniform, in the 1890s. One I remember vividly was a photo of Pete McClaren, who was both a coach and player in the period. Upon pulling out his photo, she said, "Oh was he a good boy." I thought I saw in her eyes an indication that she had once had a crush on him. I assume that all of these photos eventually ended up in the University Archives. I need to check on that.

Jimanotts (sp?), the Lantern, the Union, Dante's Inferno, sometimes the Towne House, and occasionally, the Tavern.

Oh, and in my senior year, they were able to sell 3.2 beer in the Front Room (?) at old Baker Center.

Yep. Those two "townies" that lived upstairs always had good weed. And stuff.

Until they fell out and Jeff moved to Columbus. I think John may have stayed in Athens but I can't swear to it.

Was it my imagination or did the owner or manager of that bar look just like Frank Zappa? Or almost just like him?

I was a disco guy and hung out at the Deck. If the Longbranch was the place in the alley, a friend used to spin oldies and I would hang there that night. CJ’s was a favorite when Richard Syracuse used to tickle the ivories with standards and jazz. May God rest his soul.

That's the mostly likely place to have seen him back in the day, but Willie performed in Athens. He'd signed with A&M records in 1981 and performed at that year's SpringFest at the intramural fields near the Hocking. I booked him into the Frontier Room that night as a way to sweeten the contract a bit. I think after that gig, though, he ended up playing at Swanky's moving forward.

I was a worker bee on three SpringFests and kept the '81 and '82 staff jerseys over the years. Our youngest took them to Athens as a student and said every time he wore them he'd get lots of comments/questions from fellow Bobcats. Fun.

Great memories from that Springfest. One of the few times over the past 40-plus years that Willie had a large backing band with keyboard and sax players and backing female vocals, if I'm remembering correctly. May have been The Shadowlords or The Buttons backing him at the time.

He also frequented upstairs at The Union and a bar down near those old intramural fields that was like a barn or old warehouse. Can't remember the name of the bar.
