In the late 80s, there used to be remnants of an old football stadium behind Siegfried Hall, which I assume is the one you're talking about. If I remember right, it was an old concrete set of grand stands. Don't know if it's still there. I assume not.
Yes, that was the old Athens High School football stadium back when AHS was actually in the city. It has been completely torn down now. Not even hint that it was once there. From Mrs. O'Bleness' description it may also have been the site of the first Ohio University football field. She was getting up in years when I interviewed her and some of her descriptions were a little hard to follow, but to the best I could understand her that seemed to be what she was saying.
When I talked with her she showed me a number of photos of football players, in uniform, in the 1890s. One I remember vividly was a photo of Pete McClaren, who was both a coach and player in the period. Upon pulling out his photo, she said, "Oh was he a good boy." I thought I saw in her eyes an indication that she had once had a crush on him. I assume that all of these photos eventually ended up in the University Archives. I need to check on that.
