Ohio alumni Ken Broo and Tom McKee retired from WCPO-TV last month. They combined for 67 years on Cincy TV. Ken was a classmate of mine and Tom was a year ahead of us. Tom also was in the 110. Here are a couple of stories about them:

Broo is my favorite personality on 700 WLW. Not just for his insights on area sports, but also his vast knowledge about rock-n-roll history. Not to mention his occasional shout out to his alma mater, The Ohio University.

Ken Broo tried out for the hockey team as a goalie in the mid-70s. Not terrible but was waaaay down the depth chart. Nice guy. He used to sit on the bench and do play by play of practice into the butt end of his goalie stick. I guess he found his niche in the game.

Seconded. Sunday morning Sports Talk is a frequent listen in my house/car. I'm of the understanding Ken is going to continue to do that, and occasional spot duty at WLW.

Broo ended his Sunday a.m. show this past week interviewing Phil Steele. After the obligatory review of osu, uk, uc, . . . Broo finished the segment asking him about "America's team", the team that plays in "beautiful and historic Peden Stadium." Broo enjoyed informing Steele and the listening audience about the great 1968 team, led by Cleve Bryant, Todd Snyder and coach Bill Hess. Both Steele and Broo believe this year's Bobcat team will also win a MAC championship.

On a side note, it was about 2 months ago when I was listening to Chick Ludwig one Sunday afternoon when Ludwig brought up something about Cincy batters going 3 for 15 with runners in scoring position. He added something like how "his Ohio State University education tells him that that's a .250 average." Of course I had to call in and correct him. I told him that his osu education isn't worth all that much if he's unable to compute that this is a .200 average. I also told him on the air that his WLW colleague, Ken Broo, would surely use his superior Ohio University education to mentally figure that one out.

+1 My superior Ohio University education had me checking your mental math with a calculator, and no surprise, you are correct. Happy to see you take it to these typical representatives of the "The"! ;-)

As an aside, do they have any idea how ridiculous most people outside of their own orbit think the "The" business is? A cousin from Minnesota texted me when he first heard about the trademark attempt, "What stupid, arrogant, assholes." Think that sums it up pretty well! ;-)

There's also a write up in The Athletic that is worth reading.

As I noted above, Broo still does Sunday morning sports talk on 700 WLW that I listen to almost religiously. It's one of the best radio shows I tune in to.

Also, I can't recommend the $40-$60 a year for The Athletic enough. It's money well spent for sports journalism.

C'mon, OCF, no calculator necessary. Some of my sixth-grade math students, but not all, would simply (and mentally) reduce 3 out of 15 down to 1 out of 5 and know that 1/5 = 0.20, or 20%.

Now that I think about it, I believe OCF has mentioned having a second degree from osu.

Didn't he get kicked out of OU for grades?

Yes, my master's degree is from A&M. Oh the shame of it! But, I have two degrees from the real OHIO. My father was a math professor, and often pointed out the difference between arithmetic and mathematics. Some people are good in both, and some in one and not the other, and some in neither. My mother's brothers were all journalists and her father owned a small-town paper; I seem to have gotten more relevant genes from that side of the family.

No shame in saying I got my master's from osu after earning a BSJ from The Ohio University. In full disclosure, I was never a buckeye, however, as I attended the branch in Newark. Back then OSU-N had several sports teams and they were called the Titans.

I hope you, and others, caught it this morning as he had Frank Solich on around 10:40 with another great introduction about beautiful Athens. I believe WLW puts a recording of the show on its website.

Gotta love Ken Broo.

Caught Broo yesterday afternoon driving home from Columbus. He was interviewing a writer from The Sporting News with the focus on the CFP semifinalists. However, he ended the discussion with a question about the Potato Bowl and the "Fighting Bobcats" and coach Frank Solich.

He informed the listening audience that Ohio will build an 8-lane highway between Athens and Cincinnati after the Bengals draft Joe Burrow. The name of the highway will be "Frank Solich Highway."

I'm sure that there will be some additional Ohio State Highway Revenue Generators along US-32 over the weekends next fall.

Ha! I've had one ticket in the past 4 years, and I've only driven that route maybe 4 times.

I think I was doing 65 in a 55 somewhere near Seaman. The horror.

I got a ticket once in about that same area. That was maybe 15 years ago.
