Just read this in this weeks Kiplinger Letter:

A long term casualty of the pandemic: unprofitable college sports teams, which are already being cut as universities face plunging tuition revenue look for costs they can chop. Men's soccer and wrestling programs have been axed by two schools so far, and more are sure to follow as the financial toll mounts.

College football, the biggest moneymaker, could be in major trouble this fall if the season is cancelled, delayed or the games are played in empty stadiums. Ticket and concession sales generate big bucks for the premier NCAA programs.

Couple of things:

1.The Post has article with Nellis' comments on the impact of Covi-19 on O.U.'s
budget.

2.According to WFAN,the NFL is looking at a mid/late October start,with the
Super Bowl 2/28.

That doesn't bode well for college football either starting on time,or having a
full season.

There's an article in today's The Record (sorry it won't link) about
a student suing Montclair State University for a prorated refund on tuition.

The suit is based on his position that the on line learning options offered by the school are "subpar" compared to on campus,especially for a student like him,
majoring in film.

He also says he paid student fees for access to film making equipment,he no longer has.

Be interesting to see how this plays out.

I would think that,if he wins,there's going to be an avalanche of there suits.

I am enraged and saddened that my hard working, award winning colleagues who are life changing educators and mentors are now being given notice that they will lose their jobs.

It's official. Ohio University has started firing instructional faculty, and they're floating the idea of getting rid of some tenure-track faculty as well. Nonetheless, they apparently have the money to pay 106 employees more than the governor of the State of Ohio, and to sink nearly $2 million into renovating a dining hall just to close it less than 2 years later. The men's basketball and football coaches make more than $500,000 per year each. The president makes $489,357 per year and has a $72,000 housing and vehicle stipend. Just last year, the Board of Trustees gave him a $72,000 bonus.
Their plan to balance the budget is to lay off instructional faculty with a median salary of $54,000.
Alumni, faculty and current students, if this is as gutting to you as it is to me, please e-mail trustees@ohio.edu to let them know.

The President hasn't lived there for a while.

This goes back to McDavis.

If I recall correctly,there was an issue with bats in the attic.

McDavis had to move out.

At the time there was a lot of discussion about how much and from whom O.U.
was renting a house for him to live in.

Eventually, O.U. determined that the president's residence should be "repurposed" for University use and that the President would get a housing stipend.

Hmmmmm, I guess you missed the Moon Landing as well. Because that may have been the biggest news of the past 5 years.

True story. My first year teaching in Plymouth in 1977 I had a student in class whose father actually told his followers that man had not landed on the moon. This was pre-Capricorn 1.

True story. My first year teaching in Plymouth in 1977 I had a student in class whose father actually told his followers that man had not landed on the moon. This was pre-Capricorn 1.
For any Big Bang Theory fans.

They had an episode where they bounced a laser off reflectors on the moon,
to measure the distance to earth.

No way to prove whether the reflectors were put there by a man,or an unmanned probe,but they do exist.

This is the same technology that we Land Surveyors now use to directly measure distances of up to a few miles.

I will not quote my response to each of the last 4 or 5 post. But each of you truly made me laugh. And Al I remember seeing Capricorn 1 in the theaters. I also know an educator that loves to teach about these conspiracies during their history class during the Age of Enlightenment. And if I knew how to post pictures nothing embodies bodies these comments then the dumb and dumber Shane or he points to the news article “man lands on the moon”.

I don't really see a case on having tuition refunded, but it probably would be fair to have a partial refund of certain fees, which for certain programs are extremely high.

The argument is that the on-line classes are "subpar" compared to on campus.

I can see this argument not being viable in the future,if the scope of
an on line class is published in advance.

That was not the case here,where on campus classes were transitioned to on-line virtually "overnight".

A number of classes couldn't provide the same level of education online.
The Post had an article about a professor saying that his Astronomy class
was a shell of itself on line.

What gives more credence to the argument is the fact that a number of schools like M.I.T. and the Ivy's saying that on-line classes don't provide the level of education expected of their institutions and that, if they can't offer on campus classes,they may shut down,until they can.

The Akron cuts may be to cut back on administrative overhead....many of the courses could still be offered, perhaps?
