A national treasure. If you haven't experienced his music, try a little "Sam Stone" today.

I'm a Clocks and Spoons guy, myself. Sad day.

"He's a whacked-out weirdo and a Love Bug junkie" just might be the best lyric ever written. See: "In Spite of Ourselves" with Iris Dement on YouTube.

One of the greatest lyricist ever.

I have a circle of friends who are all very good amateur to accomplished musicians, and a few of them singer/songwriters. We have been getting together and and play/jam couple times a year for 30+ years. Guitars, banjo, upright bass, mandolin (me), and occasional fiddle, harmonica, even piano and a horn, etc. "Americana" is the preferred genre.

When not playing a tune written by one of the group, the most common go to's over the years are - In descending order:

Bob Dylan
John Prine
Steve Earle
Neil Young
Guy Clark

John had fought off a lot of health challenges recent years. For this to be the one that he succumbed to just seems so "unfair"....
