The odds that it was Thom and not Marty who went down sayingsomething this dumb on the air is unbelievable. Marty was always one syllable away from saying something terrible, it seemed.

According to the announcers on WFAN this morning,the first thing you're
supposed to learn in broadcasting, is to act like the mike is ALWAYS on.

The first rule should be, just do what’s the right thing and you don’t have to worry about a Hot Mic.

If you heard his apology that they “let” him make, he apologized to his employer first then his fans, and never mentioned the group or people he may have offended.

The tone in his voice when he said the offending words undercuts any apology he makes.

If he’s truly sorry, he’ll do what Tim Hardaway did and completely dedicate himself to changing his mind.

I'm sure he's called his last game for the Reds.

Speaking of Tim Hardaway, I don't remember when exactly (somewhere in the 2013-2014 range I think), but I swear I saw Tim Hardaway in the Convo. I glanced at him a few times and had that "I know that guy" feeling, but couldn't place it until I went back to my seat.

Last I heard, Nancy Cartwright hadn't said or done anything offensive -- except as Bart Simpson.

It's easy to not realize that a mic could be hot. One time in the late '70s I was broadcasting a high school b-ball game live and was in the middle of the postgame show when someone shut off the electricity to the press bench. I saw the lights go out on my control board and yelled "Sh*t!!!" I hadn't worked much with that particular piece of equipment and didn't realize that it had a battery backup.

Still, Thom Brennaman is experienced enough that he should've known better. And it's extremely disappointing that he would have that attitude as a person, let along bringing it into his workplace. Apologies these days are obligatory and it was good that he seemingly pulled himself off the air (although it's unclear whether that decision came from higher-ups). But, yeah, he's probably done.

He DID not pull himself off the air! That’s been pretty well documented today. If you are around a mic it’s on, if you are doing a remote broadcast you better know it’s on due to the logistics and delays.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if he thought the mic was off, and his apology matters even less. He--as the kids like to say--showed his ass. That he did so in a way that publicly insulted and dehumanized millions of Americans is more than enough justification to see that he never calls another sporting event in his life. He showed who he truly is in his heart, and no half-assed public pseudo-apology is going to change that.

You'd have to ask the sponsors who pay the money. Good question, but so far the economics have not been kind to forgiving.
