Does any old timer here remember the little dive on the left as you drove toward Athens on what was then Rt. 33? It was either near the base or part way up that final hill (Morrison-Brown Hill). My Athens High School buddies referred to it as the "Slippery Tit." You know high school boys! Recently while driving up that way I tried to figure out where it used to be, but there's too much vegetation growth that it's former location appears to unrecognizable today.

Think that was it! It's been a long time, but that does sound right. I wonder if any photos of the place still exist. I think that I was only in it once or twice, but it was kind of legendary in its own way. Thanks for helping activate a few dormant synapses in my old brain. I seem to remember that there was one waitress in the place who was kind of saucy, but I don't recall any details. Maybe others can remember more details.

Edit: Was that the waitress they called "Black Julie?" Or, was she at another local dive? As I say, my memory is a little foggy on this subject.

Thanks, RSBobcat. I didn't realize that it had lasted into the 1980s.

Never got to that side of town, but I spent quite a few nights at the old Club 33 on Rt. 33 (now 13) north of Athens.😊

My Uncle Russell, who was a student both before and after WWII, always talked about taking his dates to the Club 33. During the war he served as Tech Sgt in the U.S. Army.

Black Julie owned the Star Bar on West Union. Her brother owned Angelo’s Pizza and several rental properties around Athens.

When I was at O.U. back in the mid 70's,Athens was dry on Sundays with the all
the uptown bars closed.

All the guys in my dorm (GAM) used to go out to Club33 pretty much every Sunday
night.

Thanks. I thought that I might have been getting my bars mixed up. I had forgotten all about the Star Bar until you mentioned it. Was that where teh Smiling Skull Saloon is now located?

When I was at O.U. there was a building on the perimeter road around the South Green that had a Pizza Hut and a second floor bar.

The building was on the left when you came accrosss the railroad tracks from the
East Green.
Anyone remember the bar's name ?

I haven’t been in that part of Athens for years but believe the Smiling Skull is located where The Ritz was when I lived beside the Star Bar in the 60’s. The building I lived in was owned by Black Julie’s brother Mitch and was called Mitchell Hall in his honor. It was at corner of Union and Foster Place beside the Star Bar. Think the Star was located where the parking lot is just west of Frida’s.

The bar was the Red Room at Lakeview. Legendary spot and still the incentive for worker/patron reunions in Athens since 1999.

Thanks !

Don't remember the Red Room that well.

We usually went to the Pizza Hut on the ground floor.

I'd hardly call the New Life Assembly of God Church a cult. They are more conservative than I am in certain aspects of theology. They consider themselves part of what's called the charismatic movement. I have friends who go there. I find your comment insulting, but what's new!

The church's current location is on New River Road. Here's its website:

We’d head to Dean’s Midway to catch the Bogus Brothers in the 79-82 timeframe.
