Here we are in mid-April and there are only 5 MAC schools with verbal commits.

I don't really understand how Miami already has 10 verbals. I guess kids are really excited to go to Oxford?

Verbal Commits (as of 14 APR)
Miami(OH) - 12
Toledo - 9
Northern Illinois - 5
Central Michigan - 3
Kent State - 1

This does seem strange to me. Maybe Oxford Tech sucks so much that they are vacuuming in NIL money or something!

Per normally reliable BA, Ohio has 1 as well.

Thanks, for some reason the Team Rankings from 247sports didn't show the Central Michigan or Kent State.

Miami(OH) received 5 verbals in the past week.

Not sure what they are pitching to these kids...come to Miami where you can maybe win 5/6 games and lose to Ohio pretty much every year? I guess they've gone to a bowl game the past few years but who doesn't?

Some of these kids are getting great advice. Go ahead and commit to a place you feel comfortable and can still entertain bigger offers if they come along. Transfer portal has changed the game with HS recruiting. If they aren’t highly rated players with multiple P5 offers, it’s best to go ahead and commit early. Most schools will have 4-5 commitments by the end of May, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Also, 2023 recruiting still isn’t completed as the second transfer window opens up May 1st.

Great insight CoachPMac. You're absolutely right, verbal commits really don't mean too much in the grand scheme of things. It appears more of a potential safety net until the next best thing comes along (P5 offer).

All things considered, if we can survive the next transfer portal window in May this could be a historic season, considering our schedule, and the players returning,

NVM. I'm apparently confused. I was looking the verbal commit posted in the thread below this one. I presumed that, if he just committed, it would be for 2024, but Keuchler is apparently a late addition to the 2023 class.

Increase Miami’s total to 12. They landed a QB and RB today. Both out of Indiana.

That is interesting. Toledo is in a similar situation with only 2 out of their 9 from Ohio.

Transfer portal has another opening in it. No need to jump too quickly on HS Kids.

Just being here in the Cincinnati area (northern Kentucky) I hear Chuck is pressuring a lot of HS kids to commit once they get on campus telling them they basically the don’t have an offer if they leave without committing. They may lead the MAC in early commits, but they also lead the MAC in decommits and transfers more years than not.

Signing kids who don't really want to be at Fiami and using the quick recruiting starts to justify his regime at the school when often he's medicore on the field.

Recruiting rankings beyond the 5 stars are less than an exact science because the same attention to detail isn't there in the evaluation.

The general idea across the 3 major sites (not including ESPN in this because they frankly don’t put forth many resources towards HS recruiting) is there are 30-32 5 stars which should correlate into the 1st round of the NFL draft. It obviously doesn’t pan out that way, but that’s the intent. After that is where the major discrepancies come in.

Rivals is the longest tenured service and basically views 4 stars as future All-Americans and All-Conference Players. Guys that would be drafted in the top 3 rounds.
3 stars are potential All-Conference and multi-year starters. Should be drafted in rounds 4-7.
2 stars are guys that are seen as major contributors for 1-2 years, potentially starters. Not likely to be drafted.
G5 schools can only end up with prospects 3 stars or better if they’ve already been rated as such before committing to a G5 school. If they commit and have not been rated, the highest they will be given is a 5.4 2 star. However, the same rule does not apply to portal ratings.

247 has taken a smart business approach and flooded the market with 3 star ratings. It gets more eyes on their product and their brand is mentioned more often.

On3 is the “new kid on the block” and has poached a good number of Rivals sites and now has about 50ish team sites. They include other sites ratings, but have since given their own ratings the most favor followed by 247, Rivals, and ESPN (in that order). They tend to give bias to prospects that are being recruited heavily by the schools on their team sites.

MAC commits are the most up to date on Rivals, but 247 has easier access despite not always being correct or current. This is the first year Rivals has included portal transfers, but the transfers have yet to be included in the total class ranking.

Hope this helps.

Looks like it was a good weekend in Athens. Wonder who the mystery verbal is?

I'm seeing the coaches retweeting some of the players who were on official visit.

Nice to see us secure verbals from these official visit although I hate to see us lose out to Marshall. Looks like 2 of the kids who visited recently committed to Marshall...welp, you can't get everyone I suppose.

LB Chason Clark (visited 9-11 June) & DL/OL Cameron Chmura (visited 23-25 June) both committed to Marshall.
