On National Signing Day just wondering to what extent recruits consider academic rigor when making their choice of university.
They know - as we do - that NCAA entering eligibility requirements are standard for all schools. What differs dramatically are requirements for making grades to maintain eligibility. Again, as we know, requirements differ not only from university to university but as to colleges or schools within a university and from prof to prof.
I'll cite SEC schools - Vandy excepted - as ones where maintaining eligibility seems easier than other conferences. I cite the SEC because of what its commissioner said about anemic standards in a Wall Street Journal article a year or so ago.
And there was a time when OSU required less than other schools. I'm recalling when Andy Katzenmoyer maintained eligibility by taking 3 summer school courses - Aids Awareness, Golf and Music Appreciation. I doubt if OSU would permit such a course "load" today.
Once in school is it easier to maintain eligibility at, say LSU, Florida State and South Carolina than, say, Ohio, Purdue and Stanford?
As I said, just wondering to what extent kids think about this when making their choices...
