FWIW, ESPN has John as a defensive end.  Which is correct-TE or DE?

EDIT: his ESPN highlight films show him as a DE, at least for the first few plays, and his ESPN scout report has him as a defensive end.  There's plenty of confusion as even ESPN's hightlight film has a title of tight end.  Looks like we have a guy who can play both ways, but I'm guessing he's needed most as a defensive end.

There were 5 DE's in last year's recruiting class and 0 TE's. Assuming Tanner redshirts next year, Hill would be a senior and Roback a junior when he's a redshirt freshman. I think the need is at tight end as you'd want to have at least three at that spot.

I see we suddenly got this guy to sign as soon as Toledo's HC leaves for Illinois. Toledo's turnover at HC might be a good thing for recruiting this season.

You might be right about the need at TE, however I think you never know where any of the so called DE's will end up.  I guarantee you that if the right guy showed up at DE that we would find a place for him.

It's not uncommon for college TE's to also be outstanding defensive players in high school.  In fact it seems that athletes like  our second team  TE Derek Roback  was recruited as a QB but played linebacker  and these kind of athletes can also play multiple positions.....and if they're big enough TE is ideal for them to lay some wood on people and to get open for the pass.

Our current starter at TE Thompson was one of the best linebackers in Ohio during his high school days.

Tanner is the second coming of Thompson.....on a side note I think his brother plays o line for Fiami.

Here's a nice write up today of Tanner in a story about Moeller's signees...proud for my fellow alum.

JOHN TANNER will continue his football career as a Bobcat at Ohio University under coach Frank Solich. Tanner is both a four-year football and baseball player for the Crusaders. John will play tight end for the Bobcats. Tanner, a co-captain, celebrates his football career with First Team GCL, Honorable Mention Southwest Ohio, and first Team All City honors. He serves as a Mentor Captain and participated in the Christmas on Campus and Recycling programs at Moeller. Tanner maintains a 3.7 GPA.
