I had the thought that maybe they are looking at moving some of the more athletic DEs into OLB spots. We seem a little thin at LB, although MLB concerns me more than OLB.
The norm is to go the other way - to convert linebackers to defensive ends, and safeties to OLB. Stafford Gatling and Brandon Weaver were linebackers converted to DE, while Errik Ejikke is an example of a safety converted to OLB.
The Spring roster and Spring Game will be interesting as it probably will give us some clues as to what the coaches are thinking in terms of positions for these players next year. As you look back at 2012, probably the most impactful injuries came on the D-line. So it makes sense to fill that need.
The game more so than the roster...often they list the guys as "DL", so you can't tell if they are going to play DT or DE.
I would agree that the most impactful injuries last year with probably the DL ones, but not just last year. That has been true for the last 8 years. Ohio just has never had depth on the defensive line, so if there was an injury, it hurt. In the early Solich years that was also true of the offensive line, but they recruited enough depth that the offensive line is very solid. Now they are doing the same thing on the defensive line, and I think that's a good plan.
