Ohio has offered a scholarship to Pittsburgh (PA) Baldwin High School running back Dorian Brown. The 5-11, 196-pounder (4.4 forty) also has offers from UMass, Navy, Duquesne, Youngstown St. and Robert Morris. Brown is scheduled to visit Ohio this weekend.

Ted, I think you can change this one to the COMMIT column. The Pittsburgh Tribune Review (triblive.com) is reporting that Dorian has committed to OHIO. He chose us over the Naval Academy.

Very good. There's the RB we needed, and he looks like a good one. Now a couple DBs and I'll be happy.
Scout ranks #106 RB in country and says he also had offers from Akron and Buffalo
247 Sports says #101 RB
Rivals 2 stars/5.4

Very nice.  Good size and an offer from the Academy.

I think it was in the SI article that Coach mentioned that he likes smart players.  Big agree on that.

For me, at least, that's really hard to tell from looking at high school film. I can tell you that overall I like him better than any Ohio RB recruit so far under Solich except Robert Hightower (whatever happened to him, I wonder). That said, it's hard for me to tell much from highlight films because, well, they are highlights. All highlight films are filled with 80 yard runs, untouched. What can you tell from those? That he's fast? Well, maybe, but in college, the defenses are better, and that doesn't happen very often.  How many 80 yard runs did Ohio's backs have this year?

From his film he has very good balance, and good vision, and a good sense of when to cut back against the grain. He's also very good at stopping, then restarting. In high school that worked well for him, but it may not work as well in college. There you often want a guy that knows to just run north-south and take his 3 yard gain, rather than risking a no-gain in the hopes of a bigger gain.

How is he at getting the tough yards, inside? How durable is he? Does he put the ball on the ground often? Is he competitive? Does he have that "intangible" that separates a good back from a great one? I don't know the answers to any of these.

I read that and thought....Kalvin McCrae.

Also, I do wonder why the highlight films hardly ever show those tough 3-5 yard runs.

Doc, I love you, man, but that would require our offensive side to show the least little bit of imagination.  Not sure they have that.

Now that there is another running back in the class, I decided to go back and watch film of Dorian Brown. He's a very different runner than Carson, more of a speed back who excels in open field running. The two will make a great tandem. I loved that Brown's film starts with blocking highlights, by the way. That shows a great attitude.

For what it's worth:
Rivals rates Carson 5.5, Brown 5.4.
ESPN rates Carson 76, Brown has not been rated
Scout rates Carson the 137th best RB in the country, and Brown as the 112th best.
247Sports rates Carson 87 and the 46th best RB in the country, and Brown at 79 and the 114th best.

Both are very good, and both are nationally ranked, but even better, they are very different. That means they will make a great 1-2 punch, or they could be used at the same time, with Brown running as a slot receiver.

This kid will be the biggest steal of this year. I hate the fact that people don't believe in this program, but this kid will be a steal.

I coached against this kid the last 2 years.  The one thing you cannot tell from his film is that his team overall is terrible.  He never had a good O-Line to block for him and all of his yards are from his effort.  He was his entire team the last 2 years.  With this in mind every team in our conference knew this and would key on him and he was still able to put up great numbers.  I really wonder how many more yards he would have had if he had even a decent O-Line at Baldwin.  I really hope he turns out to be a good fit for Ohio!

2006 - what do you know about his personality/attitude - sounds like if he had all that on his shoulders and still kept pounding that he is a high quality young man.  Any insight?
