Ohio has offered a scholarship to Northmont High School TE Troy Mangen. It's the first offer for the 6-5, 220-pounder. I seem to recall a couple of Mangens from Northmont playing for Ohio in the mid-80's, wonder if they are related?

Buck played football and baseball (his Senior Year) and Mike was a good LB if they are of the same blood. I'll check it out. Both were good guys.

You folks are correct. Troy is my nephew and Mike is his father. Mike's brother Doug also played for the Bobcats. Being an alum myself, I have defintely shared my opinion my with Troy. I'd love to see him in Athens. Go Bobcats!

My sister will kill me. I forgot to mention his mother is also an alum. Troy is a fine young man, very bright and has lettered in basketball and baseball as well. By he way, I think he's a heck DE, but I'll admit I'm biased.

Checking the Ohio record book, Troy's dad Mike is Ohio's all-time leading tackler with 513 (tackle stats are since 1975). His uncle Doug is 8th on the list with 404 (just passed last season by Noah Keller).

You might recall when, for several seasons, Major League Baseball tracked a stat called Game-Winning RBIs.  It discontinued doing so when it concluded that, too often, the stat was misleading.  Example: When a first-inning homerun held up for a 1-0 win and the hitter was awarded a GWRBI.

I've often wondered about the extent to which tackles is a misleading stat.  Examples:

* I remember when Benny King was leading the Bobcats in tackles.  He was playing for dreadful Ohio teams against which opponents ran virtually at will.  Benny might have been a good linebacker, but should his legacy be tied to total tackles?

* At Akron Bryan Wagoner, if I recall correctly, led the MAC in tackles.  But, yikes!, he was playing for Akron which was surrendering points by the bushel.

Other stats, I realize, can be equally misleading.  If, for example, a team doesn't throw much - vintage Ohio - then it's unlikely that QBs and receivers will record impressive stats.

Formations can influence stats.  When Ohio was running the triple option exclusively, tandems piled up rushing yards.  By contrast, these days Ohio operates mostly from a one-back set.

And on on...

So glad that we have another generation from the Mangen family.  Being close to the Mangen brothers they were tough, dedicated with a high performance level.  I assume that we will see the same from Troy.

Agreed.

The younger Mangen has been selected to play in the Ohio North-South All-State game, FYI.
