Per a Twitter conversation, P Mitch Bonnstetter from Iowa Central Community College says he will be on scholarship to Ohio. He will attend the upcoming Winter Quarter. The 6-foot, 190-pounder played HS ball at West Bend-Mallard in Iowa. He averaged 41.4 yards per punt in 2012 at Iowa Central (led NJCAA) and 45.6 in 2013 (2nd in the NJCAA).

I think it's obvious that Frank is tired of the bad special teams play. Regardless of the blocking, you still need guys who can kick the ball. A kicker, and now a punter.

Ohio averaged 5 punts a game at 37.8 yards. Upgrading to 46 a punt is like adding 40 yards of improvement to either offense or defense (actually better because more is added in close games than in runaway games).

Will he be the next Zastudil?

Edit - I did notice in one video that he was outkicking the coverage, and there were quite a few big returns.  That leads to a couple questions. First, can Ohio cover the longer kicks? Second, was Mitch holding back a little, trying not to outkick coverage?

A better question, can he obtain the appropriate height to go with his distance.

Judging solely from the video, the height looked good. Even so, an extra 8 yards is going to demand better punt coverage.

Stick a clock to it and see, the coverage of JUCO athletes is more than likely not the same speed as that of FBS athletes.

I'm not crazy about his technique. Not that I know anything about punting (or football in general)...but it doesn't look quite right. He also takes an extra little step that probably will need to be cut out.

Looks pretty raw...I guess we'll wait and see.

I timed it as best I could and the hang time was clearly not in the 5 second range, so there is some room for improvement.

Here's a video of him passing, running, playing DB, returning punts, and returning kickoffs. He might make up for a little shortage on hang time by being a threat to run/pass out of punt formation, ala Hershey.

Anybody know which Bobcat coach works with the punters on technique? Bonnstetter's  leg extension seems low at the point of follow through.
