Seems to me that we are short on fast athletes this year. A punter and a kicker in a classs is new for us.
This year's class is probably normal as far as speed guys, but last year was definitey loaded with big manz, so i was hoping this class would have a few extra speed guys.

As for the punter and placekicker, maybe the Special Teams Coordinator was able to get in a word with the Recruiting Coordinator,

My mistake, colorado. I forgot that they added some speed guys late to last year's class so it didn't end up unbalanced in the end. Maybe the same will happen this year.

Edit - The same is indeed happening - Since this post, Layton and Washington have been added, and Brunis is visiting, so the balance between speed and size is restored.

And now Brunis is a verbal, plus Cameron Wilson is on the team, so balance has been restored to the force, er, between speed and the big manz.

How many total commits are we going to have this year? it seems like every time i look on this site another person verbally commits, especially WR's.

It seems like every year they end up with 1-3 more recruits than I expect, and we're already 2 over what I expected. Normally that means that other players are giving up the game, usually because of health related issues. Since we don't know exactly who fits into that group, we can't predict exactly how many verbals they will take. I believe I heard that Bennett had left the program, and I think there was some question that Tanner might have as well, because of repeated injuries, but there must be one or two others leaving, by my math. It is also possible that Venham's scholarship moved to Bonnstetter.

Wow, reality check.  So, right when I decided I'd use the most comprehensive recruiting service for rankings, 247, when I go to the site what do I see?

OHIO #103 out of 138 overall with 6 3-star guys
OHIO #6 MAC

Then I look at other schools I follow like UC, Marshall, etc. and I see upwards of 10 3-star guys on any and all  teams even with a ranking down into the 70s.

Sorry guys, just more of the same this year...under the radar, borderline 3-star, low end of FBS and middle of the pack MAC.  This staff will have to be really good next year in coaching up to move the program forward.  Perhaps the new blood on the staff will be good for the program.

I don't have a ton of disagreement with the 247 rankings, but note that there isn't much difference between 80 and 103, and note that Ohio has several unranked players. If you scroll to the bottom for each team, you'll seem some "unrated' and some 70's, which implies that they are either unrated, or they think they are bad,  usually the former. Last year, for example, Ohio had two players rated 70, Cope, and yes, of course, Mr. Freshman All-American, Tyrell Basham (and I'd rather think that he was unrated than think they though he was bad). At this point, for 2014 Ohio has 4 unrated players Jones, Brunis, Meyer, and Royster, plus a few not yet listed, Irons, Washington, and Layton.

If you look at teams from major conferences, you will find few if any unrated players. If you look at MWC, Sunbelt, and MAC teams, you will find a few. Among the teams just ahead and behind of Ohio in the MAC:
Ball State has 2 unrated out of 18 listed players, and 112.76 points
Buffalo has no unrated players of 23 listed, with 110.75 points
Toledo has one unrated player of 20 listed with 106.67 points
NIU has one unrated players of 18 listed with 101.84 points
Ohio has 4 unrated players of 21 listed with 101.29 points
BG has no unrated players of 19 listed with 95.71 points

If you figure each player when rated adds ~5 points, just rating the unrated players would basically move Ohio into a near tie for 2d in the MAC, behind the crazy WMU numbers:
WMU 149.16
Ball State 122.76
Ohio 121.29
Buffalo 110.75
NIU 106.84
BG 95.71

Then, add in the unknown players from each team, and I have no clue where you stand. For example, say NIU adds 7 more players, that is going to make a huge difference.  Of course, if they just give a 70 to all the unrated players, which they may do, that may only add 1-2 points, not 5 per player. I suspect that post signing day most MAC teams will be rated somewhat higher than they are now, including Ohio, but we'll have to wait and see.

In the end what matters is winning on the field anyway, but I don't see anything here that doesn't tell me what I already know, which is that WMU has the best class in the MAC on paper, that Ohio is one of a handful behind them, and that other than WMU, no MAC teams are recruiting at a level comparable to AQ teams or even AAC teams.

And, since the post above, Ohio has added two more players, both unrated, of course, Papi White, and Frueauf, but both have definite talent. If they get rated, they will pop Ohio up the ratings some, but if not, they won't. Regardless of what the rankings say, I am very comfortable saying that I think this is the best recruiting class yet, particularly on the offensive side. You have a top QB, not one, not two, but three top running backs, all very different, a great group of linemen up front, and some very good wide receivers.

Three to five years down the road it's not difficult to imagine Duckworth and Irons/White in the backfield as a  power/speed 1-2 punch, with Walker in the slot, Connor Brown at TE, and Brunis, Meyer, Tyler Jones, and Chek Washington at WR, plus up front a veteran line of Pruehs, Dudziak, Langenkamp, Lowery, and McCray. I see some serious points scored.

Defense is not quite as impressive (how could it be?), but has some players, too. I would guess that after this offensive group, next year's class will focus on the defense, as last year kind of did.

A guess at math. I count 22 open scholarships. Figure Sprague and Yaz take two of those, and figure Venham is done, and we're at 21 spots for 27 commits. There is speculation that commits Murray and Washington won't qualify until after next season, so that's 21 spots for 25 commits. There's more speculation that TE Tanner and DE Bennett won't be back, so that would be 23 spots for 25 commits.

So we're looking at either 2 commits not showing/going JUCO for a year, or 2 more current players not showing, or some combination thereof. That's assuming no more surprise commits and no more walk-ons getting schollies (Ian Dixon, maybe???).

My guesses would be Trae Clark not showing (which will make me sad, b/c 365 lb. NT yes please), and one of our current WRs.

I'll take a stab at the math, too.
Seniors - Ted shows 13 Juniors in 2013, and so do I
Juniors - Ted shows 19 Sophomores in 2013, but I think Everhart and Chapman got scholarships, and you would have to think that Yaz would get one. I'd agree that Venham has most likely lost his and the rumor was that Bennett won't return. That gets us to 20 Juniors.
Sophomores - Ted shows 11 redshirt Freshmen, to which you have to add the true freshmen that played, Mangen, Stewart, S. Smith, Sayles, Basham, and Wood, which gets us to 17. Rumor is Tanner may be done, but he is offset by the return of Windham, so you are still at 17.
Redshirt Feshmen - Ted shows 20, from which you subract the 6 that played, and you are at 14. One on Ted's list is Leavitt, who will count in the next class, so you are at 13

Add these together, and you have 13+20+17+13=63, meaning 22 available to give.

The current list for 2014 should include Levitt, 5 Jucos (Boland, Bonnstetter, Clark, Murray, and Layton), plus 22 Freshmen, Duckworth, White, Walker, Irons, Brown, Dudziak, Langenkamp, McCray, Pruehs, Lowerey, Brunis, Meyer,  Kuhar, Berger, Brunson, Brumfield, Washington, Dicillo, Royster, Jones, and Fox. Thus, I show 22 available to give, and 27 verbals, so at a first pass, we're over by 5. How can this be fixed?

1. Players that don't qualify yet -   Let's start with a guess that Clark and Murray won't be in this class. Another that may have issues qualifying is Chek Washington, who hasn't yet taken the ACT, and there may be others.

2. Players leaving due to injury - Tanner, mentioned above, may be one, but there could be others.

3. Fifth year Seniors who have graduated leaving. Mark Smith is and example of a fifth year Senior, though he might also fit in the group above, given that he hasn't played the last two years due to injury. Atwell or Grady might be also fit here, if they have graduated.

4. Players who aren't playing - Eric Price is an example of someone that has never played. He might be hurt, or it may be something else, but, will he return?

5. Grades - Once in awhile a player fails to keep his grades up. Let's hope that didn't happen.

It isn't hard to believe that 3 players might leave the team, for one or more of these reasons, so it is possible that they will really sign all the verbals, and that they aren't expecting non-qualifiers and decommits.

Edit - Edited to remove Frueauf, who apparently is a preferred walkon.

In terms of team rankings:
Rivals ranking is useless. With only 9 of ~28 players in, they have Ohio at #111.
With 20 of ~28 players in, Scout has Ohio at 3rd in the MAC, #81 overall.
ESPN only ranks the major conferences and the Top 40 classes, so don't expect to find Ohio. In any case, they still only know 20 of ~28 players.
247Sports knows 21 of ~28 players, and ranks Ohio 6th in the MAC, 103 overall. That should improve some when all the players are in.

OHIO #6 MAC...

Edit - 247Sports has moved Ohio up to #2 in the MAC, and #88 overall, with 7 3-star guys. They still show only 22 of the 27 recruits, but there must be some rankings in the work that aren't showing yet because the actual list has only 6 3-star guys, and the same players un-ranked. With about 5 more guys to list and rank, Ohio will probably climb more notches before they are done.

Edit2 - and now Ohio is back to #5 in the MAC and #101 overall, as they dropped from 117 points to 106. They also dropped from 7 3-star recruits to 5.  Not that these ratings matter much, but it fun and strange watching them go up and down for no apparent reason.

From the time you posted this, it was pretty much all speed guys. In the end you have:

QB - Duckworth
RB - Irons, White
WR - Walker, Jones, Meyer, Brunis
DB - Brunson, Washington, Fox, Nelson, Layton

I expect some moving around between these. I wouldn't be surprised to see Jones end up on defense, and Washington on offense. Also, all the DBs are listed as cornerbacks, and obviously some will end up as Safeties. I see Brunson, Washington, and Jones as possible Safeties.

I predict that in a few years this class is going to really be making its presence known.

He may not be able to coach but I like his recruiting.  I wish our staff had more of this attitude:

"We're going to recruit Big Ten guys to this program and we're going to steal Big Ten guys and keep them." Fleck.

Good luck with that, Fleck.  I mean seriously-if a recruit has truly legit Big Ten talent (I mean starter-type talent, not the 85th best player on Indiana type of talent), why in the world would he attend Western Michigan, or any other MAC team, for that matter?  It's one thing to snag a Big 10 talent or two to a MAC team, it's quite another to field a whole team of them.  At least it is if your program's "clean."

News Flash:  Just look and see who he beat out for those 2-4-star guys and some of the 3-star guys.  He obviously can identify talent and "sell" them on WMU.  I understand results on the field are completely different.  Still, I'd like to see our staff go after guys like this and get them to Athens.  Say what you want, his class is identified as a Top 50 class by the "experts"...where is OUrs?

I think Fleck's personality lends well to recruiting bigger-name guys to WMU.

I know WMU fans are ready to give him the boot now, but I think he will be have success with these recruits and move on to a bigger-name program pretty quickly.
