If the football recruiting page on this site is deemed accurate regarding kids on scholarship, that page shows 68. When you factor in a class size that currently stands at (21), that brings the total scholarships to (89).....we also know the maximum allowed is (85).....there must be a minimum of (4) kids that have either defected, de-committed, not being invited back, etc....??? Is there somehow, some way this information can be made available or does anyone know the true numbers at this point? Thank you.

Unfortunately this is pretty standard across NCAA programs. Not a lot of information is made available about players leaving the program or decommits. A lot of this is due to NCAA regulations.

For what it's worth the most recent #DreamGreen15 tweet from Coach George shows 19 Cats for 19 currently committed kids (from today and also the same amount from about a week ago). That means our count of 21 either includes players who will greyshirt or we've lost more commitments than we know at this point. Hoping for the former.

Exactly. The coaches can't comment on things, so we are left to guess. It's the same at every school, though at some schools there is a more active press trying to dig things out. There are a host of problems that keep us guessing:
1. We don't really know who is on scholarship (Ted's list is only a "best guess")
a. sometimes we hear that a walkon was awarded a scholarship, but we don't know if it is permanent, or temporary
b. if someone loses a scholarship, we may not hear about it
2. We don't know who is leaving - sometimes we do hear, especially when a player transfers, but if a player is leaving the program because of injuries, we often don't find out until his name vanishes from the roster, and they only redo the roster a few times a year
3. We don't always have accurate information on verbals - sometimes a player flips, and the coaches know he has flipped, but we don't
4. We don't know who has qualified, and who may not qualify, and usually we don't find out until fall camp arrives, and some don't enroll
5. We don't know about such things as grayshirts and preferred walkons. Occasionally we get news of a "verbal" that turns out to be one of these. Recent examples were Nic Barber, Josh Kristoff, and last year Chalmer Frueauf.

The only thing we really know is that we don't know. Yes, it can be frustrating, but it can be entertaining, too. Even when you think you have a full class, you can log in, and suddenly find another pleasant surprise.

Don't get frustrated, man. It will all work itself out. Because there is no official "who is on scholarship" list, I try to keep track. I would say the scholarship list is generally 95% accurate. And don't sweat the 85. Everyone worries about this but there is so much attrition that the Bobcats are usually in the low 80's in Fall Camp. Which gives them room to put some walk-ons on scholarship.

Attrition comes from:

Players that sign with Ohio but never make it to campus. Historically, I would say this is 2-4 each year. Last year, Washington and Brumfield never made it to campus.
Medical disqualifications - Ben Russell, for example
Transfers - Justin Wyatt transferred after Fall Semester and I'm guessing there will be a couple after the school year.
Redshirt juniors who have completed degrees and decide or are encouraged to move on to their life's work
Grade issues
Off-the-field issues

Spoke yesterday with a friend and former work associate here in Virginia and his son was offered 60% of a full ride to Northern Illinois. He said something about Federals subsidies are factored into scholarships. Not sure about this and would be interested in what any of you can add.

Very interesting. If schools are offering partial scholarships, tracking the 85 will be impossible for those outside the program.

I know that many sports like track split scholarships so offered so that 18 college scholarship are split among maybe 25 or 30 team members. This is also common in Division 1-AA or whatever they call that now.

In this situation, it appeared that it was one scholarship for one player and the other 40% would not be given to another player. The funding factors in diversity standards set by the government and this recruit is not considered a minority student based on race and hometown. As a result, the full scholarship would only fund 60% of the tuition. Possibly if the scholarship covers full room and board then the total value might be something above 60%, but less than 100%.

I want to be clear that I am not sure about this and am only conveying the conversation as presented to me.

I am no expert either, but I am pretty sure that there is no such thing as a partial scholarship in MAC football or any other big time programs. Just think of the games OSU could play if they gave half a need based and half as athletic scholarship. They could have 150 guys on the team.

There are no partial athletic scholarships for FBS Football. Football, Basketball, Volleyball, and a couple other sports are head count sports. Only full scholarships allowed.

FCS football, baseball, soccer, and some other sports are equivalency sports where percentages are allowed.

Right, if someone was to be getting 60% to NIU, it would have to be non-football. All football scholarships are 100%, so NIU must be recruiting him as a walk-on and perhaps can offer a variety of other forms of aide to account for 60%.
