Cincinnati Colerain CB Jeff Christian made an official visit to Athens this weekend. I believe he was previously committed to Purdue. The 5-10, 175-pounder shows offers from Akron, Ball St., BG, Buffalo, UConn, EMU, Georgia St., Kent St., Minnesota, Toledo and WMU.

9 career interceptions at Colerain, four of which he took to the house.

First team Southwest All-District, Special Mention All-Ohio. A teammate of Demetrius Colbert and Mayne Williams, adding Christian would give Ohio a sweep of the best talent from Colerain, one of the better schools in Ohio. Here is his Hudl:

Colerain is playing a Cover-2, but whether playing Cover-2 or isolated man-on-man, he does a great job. One prediction I made about the switch to the attacking defensive Cover-4 scheme is that it would make it a lot easier to recruit defensive talent because it's exciting to play. Judging from the defensive talent they have added in this class, that has proven true.

Another corner is just what is needed for this class, too. With so many Junior CBs, and so few behind them, the position will be wide open for 2016.

Same day we lose a few guys, it feels good to add a quality recruit with multiple other offers. Don't know how the numbers compare with prior years, but feels like we're cleaning up on the amount of Ohio recruits this year.

I don't think that then quantity of Ohio recruits is up so much as the quality of them is up, and especially on the defensive side of the ball. With high 3-star ratings from all the services, and lots of offers, this is exactly the kind of recruit Casper has been asking for.

Great news on this new commitment, which I think given the brief time between now and the signing date, will probably stick. That is, he won't have enough time to change his mind again. I agree with the comments that we probably really shouldn't use the word "commitment" to refer to these events. Probably should call them "current leaning," or "best deal so far," or even "temporary expedient statement of the moment."

looks like he enjoyed his time in Athens this past weekend. Previously committed to Purdue and had offers from 9 MAC schools.

Quick comment and question. Yes, these are the kind of players I wish we would get even more of. But, can anybody shed light on why he decommitted from Purdue? Was it Athens and OHIO was just a lot better fit (with his buds and all) or did Purdue encourage him because they got someone else they wanted more? Ye old, low 3-star vs high 3-star conversation we've had before?

It appeared to me that he just wasn't comfortable at Purdue, for whatever reason, and was comfortable in Athens. He looks like a real, high-3 star player to me, and not the only one in this class.

It's make or break for Coach Hazel this year. He has to show marked improvement or I assume he is out the door.

And, yes, L.C. these are guys i can learn to like. I just hope all the Colerain kids pan out better than the last 3-star one we signed. And, in the next 2-3-4 years, I hope they help lead us to a MACC!

If you look at the specific ratings, he actually is a high 3-star player. For example, ESPN has him as 77, with 70-79 qualifying as three stars.

Casper71. What? Are you saying three stars don't pan out. No worries, there will always be unranked walk-ons to fill the gaps.

Classic class of 71 pessimism. Paint a negative narrative to keep any positive news from leaking out. I guess we DO have the resources to compete...

FWIW, beyond Purdue he ALSO had a Minnesota offer. They are B1G, right?

Optimist, seriously can't a person ask a question without you putting a spin on it? Do you think I would ask the question had I known he was a high three star guy? I was simply asking for some information. And this goes back to previous discussions about three star guys.

I'm putting a spin on it?

How many times have you repeated "we don't have the resources to compete."

Yet here we are, our coaching staff grabbing recruits from Big 10 programs. Maybe these coaches aren't as bad as you (and others) have made them out to be?

Well, it ain't repeating it if i haven't said it more than once. Just how many times have i said anything about resources? I really don't recall saying anything other than it seems to be difficult for us to get the highest rated guys we recruit to come here. Then saying it must be something structural...like malls. i don't remember harping on lack of resources so tell me just how many times have i done that?

And you know what, I said i like us getting 3 star guys the BIG whatever went after even though we all know they DO NOT always work out. That's a fact just ask L.C. I also said i can't wait to see how the guys from the last 2-3 class pan out on the field cause the last 31 games have not been as good as the 31 before them for whatever reasons.

In closing, this is starting to look like the kind of class it would be nice to get every year. But the real proof will be in the results on the field over the next few years.

if you go to Purdue's message board one of the most commented threads currently is titled "Take that MAC Conf.."(sic) where they sarcastically boast about taking a recruit from Bowling Green while lamenting the fact that they are even competing with MAC teams with recruits and struggle to get any recruits at all with more than 3 stars in spite of being in the B1G. Another recent thread with a similar theme is titled "Purdue leads B1G in 2 star recruits".

It appears that Purdue's class of 1971 is well represented on their board as well.

From my quick google search, it was north of 5 times. You went through a spree where you said it so much you specifically said "I REPEAT" we don't have the resources to compete...

I'm not surprised you're denying it now. It is pretty clear from the caliber of this recruiting class that the IPF and promise of the new academic center suggests our resources are competing quite well...

Dag Optimist, I definitely apologize if it has been north of 5! It must be my Alzheimers kicking in since I turned 65 last October. I have posted over 1500 times so I must have forgotten those 5 or so. Sorry.

I do think we might agree that it is very difficult if not impossible to compete with the Ohio States, Alabamas and ELITES of the P5 who spend like there ain't no tomorrow and put 60-70-80-90 or 100,000 paying butts in the seats (have we ever gotten a recruit that Ohio State or Notre Dame, or Mich or Penn St offered?). I do think once you get past those Top 20-maybe 40 programs we SHOULD be able to compete with the rest of the D1 folks even if they are in a P5 Conference..It really is a matter of COMMITTING the resources. I do think the IPF and Academic Center will help in that regard.

I believe Jeff Christian is enrolled at Ohio Dominican this year. Between his tweets, and their roster listing two different Jalen Christians's with one being from Colerain, I believe they just have is name wrong.

That's a bummer. Anyone know what the transfer rules are from D-II to FBS?
