What?!

You can't save a spot for him. I'm sorry. That is just not rational. Particularly if there is someone else deserving of it.

If it turns out this is not legit then he can try again next year.

It isn't like the money won't get put to good use in the meantime. The scholarship money would be awarded to worthy walkons, which is what happens when some isn't being used. But the point is that I'm sure that the coaching staff will do as Mike suggests - try to ascertain the likely facts, and be reasonably loyal. If he's convicted, he won't be getting a scholarship, obviously. But, if he is acquitted, why shouldn't he get one?

Yeah good call...I'm seeing that we also did not lose Sebastian Smith so the class still shapes up well..and thats me speaking from a football point of view. If Roger is guilty then he deserves everything he gets but I will reserve judgement until all of the facts are out. Looks like someone has put out her name and statues updates from her social media and judging from the looks of her public statements on the days these "rapes" happened I have to say I am inclined to side with Roger..(I'm sorry you just dont make happy statements after something like that happens do you?").... along with the fact this person only reported "rapes" after being caught allowing him to driver her car?? But I am not a judge jury or executioner...lol..... Jesus this is a MESS...either Rogers life as he knows it is over or someone will be looking for a job.

Classic blame the victim syndrome.

We have no idea what happened or potentially the pain one (or both) of these people are dealing with. The morally sound thing to do is to tell Roger that if he wants to play in Athens, and if (a big if) this gets resolved and he is not guilty, then he can walk-on and get a scholly next year.

If Marshall or some other MAC school wants to hold a scholarship for him, then fine, let them. Thats morally very shady behavior and frankly we are at a position as both a university and as a football team where we don't need to do that sort of stuff.

At this point, the accusations are publicized and the charges are leveled against Lewis. With the spate of NCAAF embarrassments fresh on the minds of Ohio, and national fans alike, it makes zero sense for the program to pursue Lewis.

It has taken six years to begin to shed decades of on-field ugliness. This is not the time to take any missteps.

Guilty or not, his reputation is tarnished. We have enough problems getting good press, or ANY press for that matter. Signing an accused rapist does not further our cause.

It sucks, and I feel bad for whoever truly is the victim here, but wash your hands of this and move on. That says more about our program than any four-star recruit ever could.

So one day before you (coaches) toute him as the second coming but now today well your walk-on material buddy if your not guilty...No I don't agree that there are any "morals" in that. I think coaches if asked should say yes we were interested ,yes he did give a verbal but we are reserving any judgement until there is a judgement. That just seems right to me.

Since he hasn't signed an LOI, I don't think the coaches can comment on Lewis one way or another, so whatever they do, it will probably be a private decision. I'm sure the question will be asked at tomorrow's press conference, but I don't think comment is allowed since he hasn't signed with anyone. And him getting into the university from this point on may not even be in the coaches' hands at this point.

Anyway, I hope justice is served in this case.

I'm a little confused here. There is unanimous agreement that if he is guilty, he shouldn't be on the team. The only disagreement seems to be what should happen if he is proven innocent. What some of you are saying is that even if he is acquitted, the mere fact that he was accused disqualifies him permanently?

I think we're discussing if we should hold a scholarship opening for him. I can't even figure out exactly how many scholarships we have to give (it seems like we might be oversigning a hare), so my guess is we won't find out anytime soon.

This is such a slippery slope. Had the arrest happened Thursday, after we received the LOI, do you pull the scholly? If it had happened a year from now, after he'd established himself as a team member, do you kick him off based on accusations alone?

Let's ignore football for a minute. There are two people in this whole world who know what happened in this case, and none of them are on this message board. But one thing we do know is that, innocent or guilty, this guy's life will never be the same. And even though he is facing the possibility of a very long time in jail, he is innocent until proven guilty. I'm willing to show the guy some loyalty for the time being, because it may be the only thing keeping him going through what is undoubtedly a very dark time.

And if he is proven guilty, he is going to have to answer to much more than taking up an Ohio scholarship spot and being another dark stain on college football. And I'm sure a very deserving walk-on can make us all proud to be Bobcats.

I don't think we can say "we're holding a spot open for when/if Mr. Lewis is cleared of all wrongdoing"*, BUT if/when (or is it when/if?) he is exonerated then we should certainly offer him a spot IF we still have a scholarship available. I don't know how likely that will be, and we won't necessarily know at the end of the day tomorrow either, as February 1st is the earliest that recruits can sign LOIs. They are certainly able to hold off on signing LOIs, which may leave our final number marginally in doubt at the end of the day tomorrow, unfortunately.

* Obviously our coaches cannot literally say anything of the sort. As was pointed out above, before a letter of intent is signed, coaches are not permitted to say comment on potential recruits.

"holding a scholarship open" is more of an open-ended promise than something specific you do, and it would be something the coaches would talk to Lewis about in private, not something done publicly, given that they can't comment on anyone who hasn't signed an LOI. All the money will be used one way or another. Basically if you "hold the scholarship open" you are saying that, if and when he is acquitted, you will find a way to put him on scholarship. Given that people leave for various reasons, finding that money at that time should not be a problem. No one is talking about sequestering money and putting his name on it.

I know nothing - this is only what i heard... he's a really good kid and the whole story hasn't come out yet, but the rumor is her age, race and parents are all factors in what's going on. I have no idea so lets all wait and see how it unfolds...

The case doesnt sound very solid I'm not sure how you charge rape weeks after the fact after your pulled over in your own car with the "rapist" driving..but I will leave that question to the lawyers here on the board lol. Feel bad for the kid but god you just have to be smarter than that. One day before you shock the football world here in ohio...and you shock the world literally. As far as football hopefully there are some rabbits pulled out of the hat..maybe a 4 star that we didnt know about to help push this class into the top 2-3 where I thought we where headed prior til today!!

So who was it this time that  informed tO$U that charges were going to be brought against one of their recruits? What did the tO$U athletic department know and when did they know it?

What dawned on me this morning is schools send recruits LOIs by FedEx and today is the first day for students to send those in...usually by fax. Indeed, Lewis probably has an LOI from us to sign. All he needs is his signature and one from a parent or guardian to make it official. That would put us in a position of making a public statement.

It's also VERY coincidental that these charges are leveled on the eve of signing day, almost as though the intent was to cause Mr. Lewis the greatest possible damage.

As my cousin in Shropshire would say...."That could tend to be a sticky wicket."

What puzzles me is why would he turn himself in if he knew he was innocent?

That way he shows up at the police station and is processed internally. If he doesn't turn himself in, the police come and arrest him whereever he may be (in front of classmates, family, friends, neighbors).

I agree. I picked some things up on twitter that make me very skeptical of this whole thing...

Also, Harrison Ford movies aside, if you have nothing to hide, why run?

I don't know the kid and I'd be willing to bet that know one on this board truly knows him.  They may know he is a good kid.  May have even spoken to him.  But unless you can knock on a guy's door and be greeted with, "hey, how have you been.  Come on in.  God it is good to see you," then you don't know the person well enough to dismiss this situation.  What we do know is that the story still has a lot to be told.  He is in jail as we type.  His academics are not stellar (if OSU was worried about his academic eligibility...that says a lot) so he may not even qualify.  We also know that we are not a "scholarship away" as a team and that transferring this scholarship to another individual is not going to result in a real "find" for the program.  So let's hold the scholarship and see how it plays out.  If he becomes eligible.  He gets it.  if not, either a walk-on earns it or we hold it for next year.  If he faxes it back today we tell him, "it is on our desk.  But you need to be eligible to play here and you need to conduct yourself in a manner that represents the University in order to close the deal."  It is on him, not us.
