It seems that a verbal commit is not binding on either party and could be withdrawn by either party, without any recourse against the other.

If I understand what I've read correctly,the only thing that is binding is signing a National Letter of Intent.
That's basically a one year contract between the player and the school.

It also seems that, in most cases, verbal commits are withdrawn by the player.

If that's the case, it seems that a "verbal" gives a player pretty much a "lock" at one school, but the ability to keep looking.

Just wondered if I'm missing something ?

I agree with what you say - but I think UCONN coach gave an example of where a verbal/offer from a school was rescinded recently after the player had agreed to the scholarship (but before the NLI). Probably will haunt him & the school for a while to some extent because of the publicity.

Ability to change a Pre signing day verbal seems to be about the only instance of the recruit having the upper hand in this cat and mouse game called recruiting.

WFAN has a Sunday morning show that deals with high school sports.

Because of U Conn. pulling their football scholarship on a kid from N.J.,the topic this morning was verbal commits/National Letters on Intent.

Coaches are offering verbals to younger and younger kids.

The person they had on said one of the sports with the biggest arms race is lacrosse.

He said that they're offering verbals to kids who haven't used deodorant yet.

He also talked to a caller whose daughter is being recruited.

He said that she should look at:

1.Academics

2.Social Life,including distance from home

3.Athletics,including facilities.

He gave this advise "ask your daughter,if she blows out an ACL an can't play anymore,would she want to stay at the school?"
