No, not funny at all. I'm sure some of the schools run the read and some even rely on it. He also has offers from schools such as BC, WVA and East Carolina which runs more wide open (OC came from Texas Tech). I would guess the schools all see a young man who is a good athlete and solid young man that can help them win games.
My point, and I stick to it, is he is better suited for a system that doesn't rely on the read. He is not big enough (190) to take the constant hits, nor quick enough to avoid them. And pointing to what he does on Friday nights against Jackson (where he is the best athlete on the field), doesn't change that. Good arm, good legs....dual threat yes, true read option no. (IN NO WAY am I comparing him to these players - for ILLUSTRATION purposes only - think Rogers' s style versus RG 3's)
As you are aware, I contend that he is a low to mid-level BCS recruit. And the offers reflect that - and that's okay. In fact, that is great! He may get a home state offer from OSU, but for the most part, the high-end BCS teams (GA, FSU, Bama, Mich. etc.) have their QBs slotted for the class of 2015. He will continue to get "interest" from them, but that is for THEIR insurance - in case early next season (before LOI are signed), a recruit blows out a knee, gets arrested, or decides he wants to play near granddad, the school can call him up and say, "you know that slot that may open up..."
NC State, BC, Iowa St., WVA, TN - that is a hell of a list and more will be added to it over the next 120 days. He should be proud, as should fans and residence of Athens. My only advice to him is "don't be an insurance policy. Go somewhere that wants you, not a replacement." The recruiters are defining his playing field. And it is a hell of a field.
My new neighbor three doors over is getting "interest" as an o-lineman from UNC, State, etc. - but his level of offers are coming from App St., East Carolina, perhaps a Wake or VA. That's GOOD!. His dad and I were talking the other day. He'll be doing the camps this summer and can still hold out for that "wish school" (UNC for him), but he needs to start taking a look at the schools (academically), and systems (he is not quick enough to block in read option) and think about what makes since for him. That is not a slight to the young man - just the way it is. The same is true for Joey.
I'm sorry I don't genuflect every time you mention Joey's name, nor gush "BC! - look out. Every ACC school will follow" - it is not a slight so you don't need to defend him. He's a good kid. I wish him the best. Personally, it sounds like a WVA or NC State is a good fit for him - uptempo air games - can use legs to extend plays. That's my bet. He can best compete against the other QBs in that type of system.
Hmmmm..... this guy should make a living as a talent scout!
