I think that's something that has become more prevalent throughout football. Not sure what has happened to corners but it seems like they're recovering all the time and having to play catch up.

Seems to me you gotta chuck em at the line of scrimmage all the time now to disrupt the rhythm of the play. And if you give a guy a ten yard run on ya you are gonna be chasing a lot. Much easier to run forwards than backpedal.And, I feel sorry for DBs that are always 1v1.

Ohio's defense was effective late in the game bringing a little extra pressure with blitzes. It was necessary because the defensive line hasn't been generating enough on its own. But the risk is then putting defenders in one-on-one situations and that's when Ohio is prone to giving up the big play. I think the coaches are in a tough spot trying to pick whether they want to risk the one-on-one coverage or leave the quarterback all kinds of time to throw.

My thoughts? This defense is terrible. Can anyone name a non-terrible team that gives up 40 ppg to teams like Howard, Virginia and UMass? We should extend Burrow's contract another 14 years.

Somewhat OT, but still in the world of bad defenses....I saw this stat this afternoon:

Since 1940, NFL teams scoring 36+ points at home with zero turnovers are 402-4.

Two of the four losses are the Atlanta Falcons the last two weeks.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Burrow is enamored with players who can run a 4.4 or 4.5 and can jump high. That athleticism gets him excited. Those are the people he recruits. He needs to recruit gritty, nasty, football players who don't get caught up in the crowd and the accolades. Players who don't get overly excited when a receiver drops a ball and then acts like he just made the best play in the world. Until we recruit kids who love to tackle and do it properly, we aren't going anywhere.

Here's the thing: you can teach tackling and technique. You can't teach speed and athleticism. So I'm OK if you get the fast, athletic guys, as long as you can teach them to play football.

I’ll say this-last year’s much more ballyhooed defense allowed more points to UMass, 50 points.

P.S. Any extra credit for correct usage of “ballyhooed’? :)

What I've noticed is you don't see the big plays of past years which made otherwise average defensive play very good. An INT or tackle for loss here or there would cut a team off at the knees. Is it because the staff plays more man to man with the secondary these day which negates the potential for mismatches?

Here's the thing: you can teach tackling and technique. You can't teach speed and athleticism. So I'm OK if you get the fast, athletic guys, as long as you can teach them to play football.

Considering that the Seattle Seahawks trained their players in rugby style tackling, it would seem that even at the highest level it is possible to teach players new tackling techniques.

Nobody in that defensive backfield is overly fast and they are a poor tackling group. There were five 4.4 guys and the only one on defense was Dylan Conner. They all faceguard especially fox and they all miss tackles. I like number 12 and I can’t wait to see Drake and Floyd play. Hudson has potential and brooks looks ok at times. Hagan lays the wood but in the open field can be suspect and he does not make the right reads all the time, that being said he has the most potential, he accelerates to the ball very well and has a knack for stripping people. The motley twins seem like they have good technique, I don’t know about their speed. Nelson has that Grobe Forget it and drive on (FIDO) mind-state, he can give up two 80 yard touchdowns and then celebrate on a pass deflection like he has won the lottery.
