OOC this week:
vs 1AA: 0-0; 10-0 on the season
vs G5: 1-2; 4-7
vs "P": 0-2; 3-20

That's it for 1AAs and "P"s. Just three OOC games vs G5 teams are left: Fiami-Army (Oct 20), and Army-EMU and NIU-BYU (both Oct 27).

And this is why I still think Ohio has a chance of winning the MAC despite its defensive struggles. Most teams have an area they struggle in just as badly without a strength as good as Ohio's offense. Not saying it's going to happen but it could. Buffalo and Akron probably will be the only teams in the MAC with winning nonconference records. Eastern Michigan can go 3-1 if it beats Army but that doesn't look likely. Akron maybe wouldn't have accomplished this if not for the game with Nebraska being cancelled. Buffalo looked to be the best team until getting killed by Army yesterday. Now I'd say maybe Toledo, even after getting blown out at Fresno State. The MAC East ranks below the Missouri Valley in the latest Sagarin rankings.

Rourke is only a junior.

If he stays healthy he is perfectly capable of leading us to a MAC championship this year and/or next year.

The defense should be better next year and we might have a better chance of winning then. The jury is still out whether or not they’re strong enough or improve enough this year.

Nebraska remains winless, so Akron most likely cost themselves a win by not playing that game on Sunday.

As for Ohio winning the East, it could happen. Right now the three favorites for the East appear to be Ohio, Buffalo, and Akron, and it appears that a 5-3 record may be enough, if you can win the tie breakers. Ohio plays both Buffalo and Akron in Athens, so the schedule is favorable to Ohio.

Nevertheless, I still believe that you can't win a conference without a defense. Ohio's defense did show improvement against U. Mass, but they still have a long way to go. The best news is that the three most important games, Miami, Buffalo, and Akron, are the last three games of the regular season. If Ohio's defense is going to continue to improve, it will have the maximum time to improve before those important games. Will it be enough time? We'll have to see.

How will injuries play out as the season proceeds? Improving programs that get out to fast starts sometimes tail off as injuries mount. Teams with a history of winning tend to hold up better later in the season.
