It is pretty depressing to learn of these realities in life.

Homer Bailey with the Reds this year went 1-14 with a 6.09 ERA and was/is getting paid $21 million for it. Nice work if you can get it?!

Sad thing is, ownership hasn't yet shown that they're wise enough to let the baseball guys make decisions instead of pushing to sign players they like the most. It wouldn't shock me if they gave Hamilton a 3 year deal at more than he's worth this offseason, solely because Castellini likes him a lot.

However, what might be even worse is paying a punch-and-Judy #2 hitter (masquerading as a #3 hitter) $25M this year and $25M each of the next 5 years.

The Reds paid Bailey $21 million this year to produce -1.5 WAR. That's staggering. It's also a relative bargain compared to the Orioles sending Chris Davis $23 million to put up a -2.8 WAR, one of the 20 or so worst performances in the history of baseball. Both deals make the Ryan Howard contract look fiscally sound.

At least Cincy can buy Bailey out for 20% of his 2020 contract after next season. Baltimore is stuck paying the full amount to Davis for the life of the contract, which runs until 2022.

Votto has been fantastic, and is alongside Tony Perez as the best first basemen in club history (in my opinion). If he can regain form for 2-3 more years - tough for his age, I know - I think he's potentially getting HOF votes when he's eligible. He is a great hitter. All that said, I think his contract was a bad idea for the Reds. Had they been able to continue to put players around he and Brandon Phillips, they would have been good ideas. But Big Bob is a weird owner who spends on favorite players rather than making wise baseball decisions based on the GM's approach.

At this point, I'd bring him back for the spring, give him an honest chance to earn a rotation spot, and release/trade him before the season starts if he doesn't. I know the trade market will be minimal for him, but if he showed signs of life in the spring, maybe they dump him for a couple prospects and still pay his salary. They're stuck with it anyway.

To *sorta* bring this back to BA.com relevancy, I think this type of trend is what may be the downfall of pro sports and I would hope help schools like OU. Let me explain:

I have a hard time justifying shelling out these outrageous prices to pro games to watch guys making $20M half-ass it. But, I still enjoy live sports, especially with my kids or friends.

I've resorted to minor league baseball games to get the same type of live sports experience at a fraction of the cost. And these guys play hard.

Same for college sports. OU is such a great ticket value for what you get (not counting concessions). And these kids play hard. As pro sports price themselves out of a normal fan's budget, hungry live sports fans may turn to college sports to get their fix.

You make a good point. I've turned towards racing in the summer for an affordable ticket and great experience for that very reason. Other than certain special events, you can't sell me on a $100 football ticket, be it NFL, or P5 College football. I just won't pay it and instead I'll watch on TV. Same applies to concerts, and other sporting events. Ask me to pay $75 for nosebleeds at a concert and I'll just stay home. The value proposition isn't there for me.

And that's one thing that I try to sell people on regarding Ohio Football and Basketball. Depending on what your ticket package is, a day trip to Athens for an OU game is a lot of bang for your buck. Tailgating is dynamite. Three nice breweries, two nice wineries, and plenty of hiking, biking, and shopping opportunities make for a good day to go with a game as well.
