I know that it has been conventional wisdom in college football over many years that the team that wins the pregame coin toss should elect to defer receiving the kickoff to the second half, but I have never seen or heard a convincing argument as to why that is good strategy.

When the Bobcats win the pregame coin toss, why not receive the opening kickoff and give OUr team the opportunity to make the first score.

In at least 4 of 5 games this season, the Bobcats have been burned in the first quarter by their opponents' scoring quick touchdowns before OUr defense has shaken off their early game jitters. In two games (against Virginia and Cincinnati) the team was never able to dig themselves out of the hole, even though they outscored both opponents over the final 3 quarters.

I would argue that the dynamic of all of this season's games would have been altered had OUr offense received the opening kickoff and was able to score or at least move the ball down the field.

Works for me.

Seconded. Whoever had that statline on another thread had it right.

In that case, THEY made the correct choice...

I don't believe that was always the case in the previous 4 games, but I don't know or don't remember that for certain.

In any case, my proposal still stands...

It's a matter of opinion.

One thought is get ball and score first.

Other thought is you can possibly parlay back-to-back possessions to end 1st half & start 2nd half.

And sidenote ... Ohio didn't dominate Cincinnati last 3 quarters ... was more like other way around. Ohio jumped out 21-0 and was outscored 34-9 rest of way.

This Bobcat team reminds me of a seasoned boxer, who needs to take a few blows before getting warmed up and motivated. I don't see any quit in this team. Outmatched possibly, but no quit. I think this team is going to be just fine regardless of who starts off with the ball or not.

You are correct on that...guess I must have been sleeping during that game, or have projected back my memories of the Virginia and Massachusetts games to the Cincinnati game. :)

If you defer you get the opportunity to have back to back possessions and scores, which can be 14 point or more swings and set the tone for the game and half. Also opportunity to start on a short field. Deferring is most always a solid choice.

I've always thought the visitor should have the ball first, like baseball (well, they're on offense). A coin toss is a very silly way to determine something that is not a game of chance.

I wonder if anyone has ever studied w/l as it relates to who kicks off the game. ... or just who wins the toss because it's a chance to play to your strength early.

Aside from that, I like kicking off because it challenges your D to start the game off with a stop. Get that one stop and you're off and running!

Of course, we don't ever get that stop, and our offense has yet to score on an opening drive, so who knows what would work.

Defer defer defer! You want see what your opponent can do first. And as others have stated and Bellicheck has mastered...the 14 point momentum swing before halftime and 3rd quarter could play big momentum swing in second half. Never take the ball first. Especially in OT!
