I have a feeling that Conner and the linebackers are going to show up today.

Go Bobbies!!
Would it be about how well the DL ties up the OL to keep the LB free to run? Have heard this before.

Sorry maybe young was the wrong choice. Inexperienced is what I mean. No other team lost as many defensive starters. And I think it’s a cheap shot to add losses from last years team on this one. It’s a different team this year. It’s frustrating trying to explain the nuances of football to people who didn’t play. The defense will continue to improve. Hopefully so will your criticisms.

Returning Defensive Starters and yards/game given:
4: Ohio (518)
5: Kent (528) , WMU (365)
6: Toledo (458)
7: EMU (417), NIU (350), CMU (336)
8: Miami (384), BG (501)
9: Ball St (413), Buffalo (355), Akron (337)

Obviously there is a correlation, but not 100%. WMU's defense has been excellent despite not having many returning starters. BG's defense has been awful despite having a lot.

I still believe that, in order to compete for a MACC, Ohio needs to give up no more than an average of 360 yards/game. That's a far cry from the 518 they have given up so far. Kent's offense is averaging 407 yards/game, so holding them under 400 yards would be a good sign that the defense is improving.

Much of this sounds right to me. Ohio generally needs to play better defensively . I think the second 2 games more accurately reflect Ohio's performance potential defensively vs the first 2 games and I would expect continued improvement on defense. While the defense's performance against Howard is fact, I think it is an outlier: Ohio had 8-9 new starters that day due to graduation and camp injuries and gave up 100 yard on the first two plays. My first hope for Ohio always is they play to their potential and compete for a MAC championship. We need the defense to progress to a point we can win the East: on any given day this and special teams can help win a championship
Agreed. Defense Wins Championships. Until Ohio shows a pulse on defense all this commotion about championships might as well be put on hold.
Would allowing a TD :10 into the game be considered showing a pulse? Asking for a friend

Ohio gave up 472 yards today, so they continue to give other teams 20% more yards than the other team's normal average. They "held" Barrett to a pass efficiency of 149.6, thanks to the late interception. His season average was 113 coming into this game, and 149.6 was his best passing day of the year, by far.

Just to be clear, I don't blame the players for the defense we are seeing this year. As far as I can tell, the blame is on Burrow. As Ohio faces better passing QBs later in the year, I'm not optimistic.

After this game, though, we do know one thing. We know what Rourke needs to do for Ohio to have a chance of winning with this defense. So long as Rourke can complete 90% of his passes, and average 14 yards per attempt, Ohio will have a chance to win. Since I'm skeptical that he can do that every game, I continue to believe that the only way Ohio can compete for the East Championship is if the defense improves substantially. With the season nearly half over, it's getting late to believe that is going to happen.

We've gotten behind by double digits early largely because of the pass defense. We've been hit for big pass plays on our opponent's opening drive in four of the first five games. I expect that we'll see every team open up with a deep pass until we show we can stop it.

LC, if it is the scheme I would blame the coach. On the other hand, if it is the execution/players, then we need to recruit better players. You know where I stand on this... for the newbies, I simply don't think we recruit good enough players to get over the hump. Given all the other teams that have one a MACC over the last 14 years, I think the results about our recruiting speak for themselves.

From 2006-13, with the old scheme, Ohio averaged 4th in the MAC in Pass Efficiency Defense, finishing first in 2009, and second in 2006 and 2011, and never finished in the bottom half of the MAC. Since making the switch, they have averaged 7th, never finishing higher than 5th. In my opinion, it very worked well at times, early on, but over the last few years, offenses have figured out better ways to exploit it.

I would say Rourke needs to stop turning the ball over.
