I actually feel like both teams can be had after last night's game. Their offenses are strong, but their defenses appeared porous. I feel our offense is better than either of theirs. We knew our D would give up points, the question was whether our O could score. We could score at will, then need to get some stops, maybe be extra-aggressive.
Road Games in the MAC ... not exactly scoring at will.

Ohio 27 pts at Kent
Ohio 21 pts at NIU

They need to get that turned around to win at WMU tomorrow and at Miami next week
These numbers are a concern. I think we would have scored 41 or 44 at Kent if we don't turn it over three times in the red zone. NIU clearly has the best defense in the conference and they just stuffed us on the ground. Some big plays were almost enough for us. I hope we get another try at them. It may turn out that was the best thing that happened to our offense. While it's easy to dismiss our offensive performances recently as having come against bad teams, defensively that was against teams that have scored at a respectable clip. We're going to score tomorrow night if we hang on to the ball. Is the new D for real? we'll find out.

Yep, we will see if our D is ready for a really good offense. I think they are. Please let Western open up with a run play. Just this once...

Or, perhaps better yet, a deep ball that is, um, well, picked off!

Why I think we're seeing what we're seeing:

Injuries - Mid-season plateau/late season drop-off: The coaches have recognized this issue and the fall camp injuries, hence the reduced contact/scrimmages during fall camp. This likely contributed to our slow start, but will hopefully continue to show benefits through the remainder of the season. This is a very dynamic issue, though, as all it takes is one game for some key injuries to occur. Things that concern me now - Kittrel's injury and the nasty targeting hit on Rourke vs. Ball State.

Offensive line performance: The key to our slow start offensively. The new OL coach and the changes he brought have takes some time for the OL to assimilate. We are now seeing the type of performance we (and MAC coaches) expected pre-season.

Defensive performance: We knew that there would be a drop-off in the front 7 due to loss of key players and lack of game experience in the replacements. They are really beginning to get their legs under them now. Will they be as good as last year's? Probably not. Do they need to be? No. If the running game continues to perform at (or near) this level, the defense will be protected by the offense.

The last two teams we have played are pretty bad...it's hard to argue otherwise. However, if we continue to play at this level, I think we'll be fine. Even with the improved competition, there's plenty of wiggle room between running a team completely out of the stadium (as we did) and just winning, baby.

The media may be ready to anoint Buffalo as the conference champs, but I guarantee that the Buffalo coaching staff is enduring their share of heartburn watching our running game grinding up defenses as we expected them to...let''s hope they get to experience that too.
Great great analysis. These coaches noticed the injuries we had in camp in 2005-2006. We let off on going super hard in tackling and it paid dividends towards the end of 2006. One thing about Solich is he will try something new and if it works..great. If not...then back to the drawing board. Thats what i loved about playing for him. Troy whopped our boys in a bowl game years after i left...and what did he do.....sent his assistants to Troy to utilize the pistol up-tempo. Years later it paid off.

Lets not forget Buffalos star Lb Hodge was hit with targeting last week and has to sit out the first half. I dont see them losing their next game but it changes a lot of schemes for their next game in the first half. And you never know in the MAC.

Totally agree on your last point. Injuries and suspensions hurt in this league more than the P5 schools. Remember talking to someone in Vegas once and confirmed my thoughts. They read the injury reports a lot more religiously in the mid-major leagues. And suspensions.....yikes. Really does mess with the schematics in the worst way.

How we feeling after the Miami/Buffalo game last night?
Buffalo looks more beatable after struggling with Miami. Miami is banged up. I think we punish them next week. Ohio is now 10th in FBS scoring at 40.9ppg.

I'm starting to think more and more that we are just two plays away from being 8-1 and having a special record too. (late interception vs UC and late fumble vs. Northern Illinois.)

Sure has been a fun few games.

This Miami game next week is huge now as everything is still in front of the Cats.

Last night was one of the more bizarre, wacky first halves I had ever experienced and I'm grateful that OUr team was on the right side of it!

Not having to play a full game sure is a blessing for our starters so they can get the most rest and recovery possible.

I'm sure Miami would love nothing more than to knock the green and white out of contention so they boys need to bring their A game again.

They do have a more legit passing attack, but statistically we just hammered the two teams that lead the MAC in recent weeks in BG and Ball State.

Taking care of the football and keeping the defense off the field will be critical to this game and could allow the Bobcats to create a comfortable distance in the 3rd quarter or earlier.

I don't see there being much of a home field advantage for Miami as they seem to struggle to have those things, what do you call them, a type of people, oh fans!

I've seen the comments about Miami being banged up etc. but just how much are the down on the injury front?
