Every so often, I think it's a good idea to reflect on part of the Nebraska heritage that I think is now been transplanted, at least in part, to OHIO soil. This a brief poem of sorts written by a Nebraska philosophy professor by the name of Hartley Burr Alexander (1873-1939). He was an interesting fellow, and was once described by a New Yorker as a "Midwestern Weirdo." On campus in Lincoln Professor Alexander was revered as as a man of many talents -- poet, author, scholar, iconographer, and all around Renaissance guy.

The poem in question is blazoned on a wall in Memorial Stadium, it reads thus:

“Not the victory but the action;
Not the goal but the game;
In the deed the glory.”

I would like to have this same poem placed somewhere on Peden Stadium, though I suspect that would not and could not happen under the current AD.
