Nothing exciting here. ALthough, I think EMU is screwed. Anyone have a scouting report on SDSU?

No Miami makes me happy. I wonder if I a 6-7 Miami team would've gotten a bowl for winning the MAC East?

Of the MAC teams, I think Ohio got one of the best bowls against a somewhat “marquee” name, other than maybe Western Michigan against BYU. And a game on ESPN is good prime time exposure.

Glad we’re not Northern Illinois. They have to play America’s sweetheart team of the moment UAB. Not that I don’t think Ohio can beat UAB because they can. But I think that most of America will be pulling for UAB and UAB for sure will be getting all the positive press.

A few facts on San Diego State...

During its 7-5 season, the Aztecs averaged 22.3 pts per game. They allowed 21.8 ppg.

Played two P5 teams. Lost at 8-4 Stanford 31-10. Beat 7-5 Arizona State 28-21.

Only twice did SDS score 30 or more pts - 30 in a 1-pt loss to 8-5 Hawaii and 31 in an 8-pt win at 3-9 New Mexico.

Another good win: 19-13 at 10-3 Boise State.

Bad loss: 27-24 at home to 3-9 UNLV.

Just a little. SDSU this year had wins over Boise & Arizona State. They led the Mountain West in Rushing Defense at 94yds/game.

I just meant that there was no exciting matchup for the MAC. No real P5 teams or interesting pairings. I am EXCITED about Ohio being in a bowl. I'd be more excited if it weren't against a 7-5 MWC team. I was hoping for Houston or a big name team they could beat.

I completely agree. I was actually hoping for a matchup vs a Mountain West school, just one that finished better than .500 in the conference. Oh well.

San Diego State has a much better football pedigree than Ohio does. And SDSU beat two ranked teams this (or at least were ranked at the time). Ohio can’t say that. I would argue that if Ohio wins this game, and they sure can, it would be their biggest win over a “name” team since Penn State in 2012.

Cue the "this says a lot about our program crowd" in 3,2,1...

I will agree that San Diego State is better than Troy or Florida International. I may have preferred the BYU matchup from a recruiting standpoint. My original point was the whole conference (in general) really had uninspiring matchups.

Why should the MAC expect any better? It’s only bowl win the last 2 years was Ohio last year. The MAC hasn’t even been able to beat Sun Belt teams in bowl games lately for Heaven’s sake.

Hopefully the MAC shows up this year.

Anyone think there is a huge difference between these bowls? Ohio has been to all of them now, correct? This is why I call for pumping the brakes on all the "next level" talk. This is really as good as it gets, guys. There's nothing wrong with Bobcat bowl football in December...

Frank hasn't taken us to the Boca Raton Bowl yet. Ten bowls (9 different ones) for Frank in 14 years is fairly impressive at the G5 level. There is Boca, Cure, New Mexico, Hawaii, Arizona ect. among the lower tier bowls Ohio could play still out there. The next level for Ohio would in all likelihood be if the MAC could further improve its bowl lineup and become a quasi-power conference.

I thought it was interesting to note that Ohio is only one of 3 conferences along with the Big Ten and ACC that plays its conference championship in an NFL stadium and NFL arena. PAC-12 (Las Vegas), Big XII (Kansas City) and SEC (Nashville) don't play their championships in NBA arenas. The AAC, MWC, CUSA and SBC all play their football championship all on the home teams turf.

With respect to the bowls, only the SEC, Big Ten and MAC do not host a bowl game from a home stadium. I would much rather be a MAC team having to go to Florida or Alabama for a bowl than having to host a MAC school in your own stadium and call it a bowl game. Case in point; if Ohio left the MAC for CUSA it would have to play MAC schools in bowl games.

Hmmm. SDSU had the pedigree to take Hoke away from Ball St and Schultz from BG back in the 80's. WAC-MWC was a step up from the MAC. San Diego St was always the would've, should've, could've program that never turned the corner to become a consistent winner. Fresno State is the one with the deep winning tradition and was tough enough to almost knock off USC when they were ranked #1. Solich has a program at Ohio that is every bit as explosive as those MWC teams and as a darling of midweek maction has a reputation in G5 circles. I'd say most of the AAC would playing against them in a bowl be a next level opportunity for Ohio but the MWC meh.
