Don't know if these folks know what they are talking about, these projections have me a little be peeved:

Why would EMU get a better match up than OHIO?

Only thing I can figure is Ohio owes Vanderbilt a favor after the Virginia game and stepped aside so Vandy would not lose a bowl to the MAC. Still, Troy would be another nine win or better opponent for a good contest.

For those who think the Sun Belt is inferior opposition, remember the MAC hasn't beaten a Sun Belt team in a bowl game since 2014:

2017
FAU 50, MAC East Champ Akron 3
SB co-champ Appalachian State 34, MAC Champ Toledo 0

2016
SB co-champ Appalachian State 31, Toledo 28
Troy 28, MAC East Champ Ohio 23

2015
Appalachian State 31, Ohio 29
Georgia Southern 58, BG 27

2014
BG 33, South Alabama 28

Not to mention Troy is probably better than Vandy. Name recognition would be nice though.

FAU is in Conference USA, but you make a valid point. The Sun Belt is a tough league.

That's the issue. Ohio beating Utah St or Fresno would be a helluva lot better win quite honestly than a win over a 6-6 SEC or B1G team.

But the reality is ... the casual fan looks at Ohio beating Vandy or Purdue as a more "impressive" win than a win over a good Sun Belt or CUSA team.

That's one of the big issues I have with the bowls ... it's like a holiday dinner and they have a kiddy table where they stick the MAC, Sun Belt, CUSA, etc in their own bowls so they can fight it out with themselves. And the only time one of the "kids" gets to sit at the adult table is when one of the adults is unable to make it (aka ... ineligible for a bowl)

I wish these bowl tie-ins weren't so strict and you could just make good match-ups regardless of leagues and let these good G5 teams play some P5 teams because we sure as hell know they aren't willing to really play them in the non-conference season.

7-5 Michigan State have declined any bowls offered in advance. This could bode well for 6-6 Miami of Ohio and could also change where the Bobcats go...(I'd be fine with going to Detroit for a bowl).

Wait, is this true? This is the first I'm hearing of this. I'm seeing one report (http://enlightenedspartan.blogspot.com/2018/11/michigan-s... ) to this effect, but I can't tell if its a real story or a satire blog.

I read it on a MAC Football BB, but ,no, I don't have a source. Good call.

So, what's the deal with bowl invites? I thought once the Bahamas offered Toledo, the rest would fall like dominoes. I hate playing the waiting game and having less than two weeks to figure out if I can make such a trip.

Normally those offers come out after the conference championship games, chiefly because the selection of teams for the playoffs (plus the rest of the NY6) will cause a bit of a cascade in terms of which teams from a given conference are available. There are a couple of exceptions to that: independents like Army or BYU aren't in conferences and tend to have automatic bowl tie-ins that take effect once eligible assuming the team isn't a realistic playoff contender.

I figure the Bahamas Bowl declared early because there is a bit of extra prep-work involved, in terms of going international, making sure passports are in order, getting equipment shipped, etc.

Thank you notes can be sent to ESPN. THE. WORST.

They setup this selection show on Sunday and everything cascades after that.

You'll probably see stuff start to leak out Saturday night/Sunday morning... but the "official" announcements won't come out until the show unveils the CFP and NY6

https://espnmediazone.com/us/press-releases/2018/11/the-c... /

And yes ... it makes travel too damn difficult. We already bought refundable plane tickets and hotel in Frisco with the hopes that is where Ohio ends up. If not ... we just cancel and watch on TV. Totally sucks. But the worldwide leader runs things now ... and they suck.

Just to play devil’s advocate, what other broadcast partner options does the MAC have? Most homes have ESPN and it is the most recognizable sports network. It’s not a product the general public is clamoring for, so I doubt the MAC has any leverage at all. It could be worse. Marshall has spent all season being broadcast on Facebook.

It's not the fact they're on ESPN. It's how ESPN treats it.

Almost zero basketball games on actual television ... just internet TV. And not only internet TV, pay per view internet TV.

And football is primarily on weeknights holding all the fanbases hostage to terrible scheduling.

Would be nice if the MAC would negotiate just a little and give the schools some weekend game options in second half of season.

Seems like ESPN just threw them a truckload of much needed cash ... and they know it. So the MAC just does whatever ESPN wants. Really a need for multiple midweek games per night three nights a week?

The ESPN deal only exists because of the midweek games. The deal would be much, much smaller -- if there was a deal at all -- if MAC games were on Saturdays because ESPN prefers a solid 8 conferences to the MAC on Saturdays.

The MAC has no negotiating leverage. Nobody watches MAC games when they're up against P5 conference games and both ESPN and the MAC know it.

Now that the MACCG is over, we should see things fall into place pretty quickly.
