Both sides are being dishonest in this debate. (Imagine that.)
On one side, clearly the guy is a really good coach, teacher and recruiter.
On the other side, you're allowed to have issues with his playcalling without calling into question all those other abilities.
On the other, other side, it's probably not fair to question playcalling too much without knowing what expectations and guidelines he's being given from higher up the food chain, too.
On the other, other, other side if you visit opponent fan sites the Ohio coaches are more respected than they are on Bobcat Attack. This season given 41 ppg., MAC leading Ttl Off, MAC leading Rushing Off, MAC leading Pass Eff, MAC leading first downs, MAC leading 3rd down conversions, MAC leading 4th down conversions, MAC leader Ttl Off (Rourke), MAC leader Rushing (Ouellette), MAC's #3 Receiver yds/g. (White) we might actually have some positive play calling opposite the negative to consider.
I'm not arguing that the performance of the offense, especially after the conference season began this year, has made his critics (including myself at times) look pretty stupid.
Largely because the foundation of that offense is built on will be proven genius if you're able to run the ball on first down successfully and if you can run t he ball inside the five yard line.
My questioning of it always comes when Ohio cannot do those things. The answer is there is no plan B. Either we run the ball on first down and run it in the red zone or the offense does not thrive.
I don't think that bothers this coaching staff. They've built a career on being able to run the ball. They've got 40 years of evidence on their side. That was not a problem in 2018. Good for them. It was awesome.
It bothers me and I don't matter. I just have my preference for an offense that has an emergency back-up plan and a desire to see a more wide-open offense because I watch football for aesthetics and enjoyment factor as much as I watch it to see my team win.
In the end, they figured out a way to do both. Again, it was awesome.
