I know we had a lot of MBB related activity, but how about some spring ball news?
This happens every year. Big blast first few days and then nothing!
I guess we should reach out to The Post to get some action!

They scrimmaged yesterday. The final scrimmage/spring game is April 13. They will have at least one more between now and then.
Thank you.

As far as the defense goes, it looks like
1st team
D line Evans Arp Baker Ogun-Seymore
Linebacker Conner Dorsa Popp
Corners Brooks Hudson
Safety. Hagan Hampton
This unit looks good. The offense had difficulty moving the ball against them in the first scrimmage.

2nd team
D line Conrad Coleman Burks McKnight
Linebacker Wood Houston Robinson
Corners Birchette X Motley
Safety Floyd Gill
A lot of young talent in this group. Should provide good depth.

Thanks, Sam. I noticed Gill making plays in the highlight films. Nice to see him work up to 2d team. He's a walkon, if I recall.

Any idea what the offense looks like?

Here’s what the offense looks like
1st team
O line Pleasants Kitrell Hayes Meservy Grimes
TE R Luehrman
RB Allison
WR Hooks Cox Long jr
QB Duh

O line looks pretty good for replacing 3 starters. We’ll see how they progress as a unit. Not sure what’s going on at receiver yet, but Hooks looks like he may have what it takes to be our number one. Could be a lot of competition at slot. Allison looks the part and hopefully will improve his vision and pass blocking.

2nd team
O line Rogers Kieffer Sink Notestine Fernandez
TE Dietz/Grooms
RB Portis
WR Minter Edwards Keszei
QB Mischler
Looks like some good depth on the o line.

I don’t know where Buckner and Drake are in the line ups. They may be dealing with issues that kept them from scrimmaging. These depth charts are just what I observed in the first scrimmage. I expect small changes here or there before it’s all said and done.

Don't worry, we appreciate the insight. It's understood that these depth charts are from observation, and unofficial, and subject to change, but it's nice to get some information on who is earning playing time in scrimmages, even as we also recognize that some players may be hurt, or not available for the scrimmages for other reason. Keep up the good work.

The other running backs were all mentioned, but Ja'Vahri Portis, who recently was awarded a scholarship for the Spring, was conspicuously not mentioned:
2 Ross - Limited all spring due to a shoulder injury
17 Shane Bonner - 7 for 36
21 Jonathon Barna - 8 for 20
27 Neatherton - held out due to a leg injury
28 Allison - 16 for 79 yards and a TD
37 Ja'Vahri Portis - not mentioned at all

Two other running backs, Freshman Walter Wilbon III and JUCO De'Montre Tuggle, will join the team in the Fall. Wilbon is 5-11 210, and Tuggle is 5-11 195. On paper Tuggle appears to be a speed back, like Ross (5-10 195), while Wilbon appears to be more of a bigger power back, built more like Irons, who arrived at 6'0 211.

You can take what you want to from the RB numbers. But for what it’s worth, against the 1st team Defense, Allison was 2 carries for two yards. If you count 1st team minus the starting safeties, he was 3 for 9. So all the other stats for he and the other backs were all against 2nd 3rd and 4th string.

To be clear, I'm not trying to take much from the numbers. About the only safe conclusion is as to who is healthy, and who is not, and who is unaccounted for. Honestly, I expect we will get to opening day, and we'll see at least 3, probably 4 running backs get carries, but that as the season progresses, things will sort out.

Doubt RB needs blame/credit. Expected OL to be a step down from 2018. Expected DL & LB, front seven to be a step up from 2018. RBs are expected to be a step down too. Am I wrong in any of this?

Not trying to assign blame or credit. Just trying to convey an accurate picture of where the running game is right now. Arkley’s report sounds like the offense was successful with the running game in the scrimmage. Against the starting defense they were not. Enough to worry me. I’m hoping the return of Ross and the continued growth of the O line will improve the ground game considerably.

Matching ones vs ones then twos vs twos it is interesting to see where twos seem to play above that level. Seems Conrad and McKnight are twos that create mismatches against other twos. DE very deep position.

Are there any details about the format for Saturdays scrimmage?
Trying to figure if projected starters will be held out or play very little. I get the idea that we don't want unnecessary injuries.

I would expect player participation would be consistent with practices/controlled scrimmages so far. I believe Saturday ones vs ones went only one series and N. Rourke went one series with the twos.

Is there usually a two deep issued about now? Normally it is a two deep with the "OR" so sometimes we see three deep.

Usually the first two deeps I remember come out from Ourlads.com and Phil Steele. Steele's seems better. I do not expect an official chart until the Media Guide or the first game "game notes." Which ever comes first.
