This from Dan Leberfeld, editor of the Jets' Confidential monthly publication, in his Spring Practice Diary, Tuesday, April 23:
"We also can't tell a ton about pass rushing in this camp because there's no contact, and in fact, no offense vs. defense. Coach Adam Gase has the units working separately with coaches focused more on teaching than match-ups with the other side of the ball. But one edge rusher who caught my attention in practice, even without blockers, was Tarell Basham."
"Last season, Oct. 5, Basham was claimed off waivers by the Jets from the Colts. Basham was selected by Indianapolis in the third round of the 2017 draft by the organization's old regime when the team played a 3-4 defense. The new regime, featuring defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, is playing a 4-3 defense, and Basham is best as a 3-4 OLB, so they moved on from him."
"Though he didn't fit the Colts, he does fit the Jets."
"And watching him out there, we can see not only does he have perfect size for a 3-4 OLB at 6-4, 260 pounds, but he has terrific first-step quickness, is light on his feet, and has arms like vines. He looks and moves like a basketball small forward. The Ohio University product ran a 4.7-second 40-yard dash at the 2017 combine."
"In a fair competition, sans anointing, this guy could grab a roster spot. He's got the requisite size, is very athletic and has a great motor."
