The occasional big hits are put on WRs and DBs but we sometimes forget that linemen are pounded on just about every play.

Its not just head trauma.

Linemen also have all kinds of issues with joints, especially knees, and with their backs.

The constant hits, combined with their "playing weight" is a recipe for disaster.

Years ago they did a special on Jim Otto.

Watching him trying to get of bed in the morning was scary.

The sounds his joints made were worse.

It's why there's that amused look on Joe Thomas' face somebody asks him if he thought about coming out of retirement after the Browns seemingly have righted the ship. No longer needing to carry 50 excess pounds of blubber. Not getting the constant raps to the head. No 6 a.m.'s in complete agony. It must seem laughable to someone like him, whose legacy is already cemented and financial future set with a lucrative decades-long television career ahead of him, when someone suggests he come back.

...and if a lineman goes on to become President, but stumbles a bit because of bad knees, they get mocked for it by SNL.

It's what got the career of Chevy Chase started.

Remember, he also hit a spectator in the head playing golf. Was that his joints or his concussions?

I don't blame it on either. I blame it on the odds. I can tell you that I used to be a 13 handicap golfer. That's not great, but it's also not bad. I can assure you that my shots didn't all stay in the fairway. If you put me in a situation with thousands of people lining the fairway (and they weren't wearing hard hats), sooner or later someone would get hit.

Spiro Agnew also hit a spectator, as I recall.

Since you brought up concussions, perhaps that explains his comments on the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe?

All joking aside, that was a much nicer time. In the Post-Watergate years, both parties recognized the need for candidates who were genuinely nice people, and I don't think there have ever been two nicer Presidential candidates than Ford and Carter.

We probably shouldn't be talking about golf, anyway. Apparently not all bobcat attackers approve of golf: https://tinyurl.com/yyns56c6

Here's the second part of the article: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/18/sports/colorado-footba...

Makes it sound as though football should go back to leather helmets and no pads.
