When they made the official announcement that U Conn had joined the Big East for basketball,they made it clear that all other men's and women's sports would be staying in the AAC.

Right before they made the official announcement at The Garden,WFAN had an interview with a spokesmen for U Conn.

He said U Conn would be joining the Beg East for men's basketball,for the 2020 season.

He said that,"for now",all their other sports would be staying in AAC.

Maybe that was because The Big East hadn't said anything official about when the other sports would join the conference.

Although I would think that,if they're saying 2020 for basketball,it would be the same for their other sports.

After reading you post,I spoke to a couple of guys who graduated from U Conn.

They think the Big East move is a big plus for both men's and women's basketball.

They're not sure if the Big East will elevate their other sports.

They hoped that maybe,U Conn could stay in the AAC as a football only member.
But that isn't happening.

I do agree with you 100%.
No football only membership in the MAC.

I'm hoping this move by UConn starts a chain reaction that eventually kills Conference USA and the teams in that league filter in elsewhere.

16 team non Power 5 conferences that use pods (like soccer) instead of divisions. A dream scenario...

What if we added Connecticut for football, brought Massachusetts back for football and had them both sign an agreement with a huge buyout clause if they left the MAC? Asking for a friend of Randy Edsall's.

I would take UConn and UMass as a package deal for football. It provides a couple east coast markets for those MACtion games on ESPN. It also lets the MAC move BGSU to the west division for football which helps the Toledo-BGSU rivalry. 14 team MAC would allow them to go to a 9 game conference schedule and drop the FCS games. That would improve the schedule strength of the MAC. The entry fees could help the MAC make a few quick bucks.

Problem is that they would lose bucks in that the MAC's $12 million from the playoff system would have to be split 14 ways instead of just twelve ways. They'd have to make the entrance fee enough to outweigh that drain on resources. Both of those schools could afford it, though. For some reason G5 conferences with more than 12 members do not get extra money for additional members. P5 schools do, and of course, their split of the pie is much more than one million bucks per school.

No to UConn and no to UMASS for football only. The MAC will not switch to nine league games with 14 teams. Ohio will get 18,000 or more fans in Peden regardless if they play Gardner Webb, VMI or UConn in September or October. The MAC should focus on keeping the 12 schools they currently have and change the ESPN contract to permit every league teams to play one Saturday November home game. Two week night games are plenty for all schools. Just wishful thinking on my part.

I doubt that the MAC teams would want to go back to 5 game home schedules. They could give up the FCS games without expanding the conference, but the result would be less home games, and less teams eligible for bowls.
