It's interesting, and important, to take a deeper look at the Bobcats performance as they move into their toughest 3-game stretch of the season. Starting with a visit to Heinz Field to battle ACC representative Pittsburgh and coach Pat Narduzzi.

The folks who take that deeper look? Pro Football Focus. Here's how they saw Ohio's performance on Saturday.

Pitt players might not be overlooking us but their fans sure are. Everyone is focused on Penn State game in 2 weeks. Ohio game thread doesn't even make it to page 1 of their forum.

Yep, their fans don't seem interested in this game at all. Here's an article:
https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/paul-zeise/2019/09/03...

The author is concerned that Pitt might start 1-3, with losses to Virginia, Penn State, and UCF. He does mention Ohio, but says that a loss to them would be terrible, and "would essentially end any thoughts that this is going to be a successful season".

Not sure I've ever seen a supposed 6.5 point underdog dismissed so easily by a sports reporter; even a homer as I'm sure he is. Maybe he'll end up being right but it just comes across as arrogance to me.

The article on cardiachill.com is a bit less arrogant:

Heading into the season, I doubt many fans would have given Pitt’s upcoming game against Ohio much thought. If determining a win-loss record, the game would have been presumed as a guaranteed win by, well, just about everyone.

...I expect the Panthers will come out of this one alive. The roster up and down the lineup is undoubtedly going to be more talented and after an embarrassing opener, Pitt has plenty of motivation. But, suddenly the game doesn’t look like the gimme that most probably assumed coming into the season.

I have not seen mentioned in any article, nor in any post, the fact that the last time the two teams played, Ohio won. "Terrible things" do sometimes happen.

That is a little better. Perhaps the Messenger could counter with "The Bobcats have not been beaten by the Panthers since 2004 and they hope to keep their winning streak alive on Saturday." ; )

Go here: https://www.espn.com/watch /

Scroll down to the nude photo of Kelly O'Hara. When you're done ogling, scroll down to "Football Live and Upcoming," click on "see all" and scroll down to the first row of four games. We're there. If you click on the Ohio Pitt icon the ESPN+ logo comes up and it says "this event has not yet started." I hope it opens on Saturday, because on the schedule it's listed as ACCN with a lock on it, whatever that means.

Frank since taking over at OHIO has done very well against teams from his natal state — beat Pitt, beat PSU, and has had a very good record against Temple. Let’s hope this trend continues on Saturday!

Its because we aren't a high resource school with NFL level salaries. We are happy here not to be stuck paying excessively on coaches. I'd be more annoyed paying the big money at a place like Pitt when there is no realistic path to a national title when in the middle of the college football food chain.

It means you have to subscribe to the ACC Network through your cable provider in order to be able to watch it on the ESPN app.

The ACC Network is channel 612 on DirecTV, 402 on Dish and also is available on Spectrum and Suddenlink, among others. You can verify that it is part of your package ahead of time. If it's not, I'd recommend doing a free seven-day trial to YouTube TV, Hulu Live or PlayStation Vue in order to get the game. Comcast, AT&T U-Verse, Frontier, Cox Communications and Wow! are among the providers who don't offer the ACC Network yet.

Here's another article:
https://pittsburgh.rivals.com/news/the-3-2-1-column-getti...

And, here's some things to think about. First, some stats from last year for the Virginia QB, Bryce Perkins:
225-349-9, 2680 yards, 25 TDs, Pass Eff 147.5, 32 Sacks
212 carries for 923 yards, 9 TD, 4.4/carry

Compare that to Nathan Rourke, last year:
165-275-8, 2431 yards, 23 TDs, Pass Efficiency 156.0, 19 Sacks
137 carries for 912 yards, 21 TD, 6.4/carry

So, Rourke averaged significantly more yards per carry, and had many more rushing TDs, but otherwise, their stats were fairly similar. How well did the Pitt defense defend against Perkins last week? Perkins was way off his norm:
20-34-0, 181 yards, 2 TDs, Pass Eff 123.0, 3 Sacks
18 carries for 44 yards, no TDs, 2.4/carry

So, Pitt, while they struggled in other areas, did a very good job of defensing Perkins. No doubt they will emphasize defending Rourke this week, and I expect Rourke will have a much more difficult time running against Pitt than in any other game this year. To win, he will have to have a great day passing, and probably will need to pull a Houdini escape or two, because Pitt will be bringing some pressure.

Finally, remember that Whipple has averaged over 40 yards a game in his last two games against Ohio, and that was with UMass players. Pitt is still struggling with his offense, fortunately, but given the quality of Pitt's defense, I don't think Ohio can give up 30 points and win, much less 40+.
