Michael Roth--

Vegas sets Ohio season win total at 7.5, should you go over or under?

Despite being picked as the favorite to win the MAC, the Ohio Bobcats aren’t listed as the highest win total in the conference according to vegas. Instead the Bobcats are tied for second with Western Michigan at 7.5 projected wins with Toledo holding the top spot at 8 wins.

This brings Bobcat fans to the most important question, should you bet over or under on this listed win total?

I think any smart Bobcat takes the over with the expectation that we'll beat it by precisely 1/2 a win.

It's kind of our thing.

I'll make one prediction: At the end of the year some of these will be drastically wrong. I don't, however, know which ones that'll be. If forced to predict, I would guess that Ohio, Marshall, Kent and Pitt are going to have more victories than projected in this analysis.

Dunno if it's a lock, but if action at my online sports book is any indication, lotta folks betting over. You now must lay $14 to win an additional $10 on the over. That's a -140 bet. The under is +120--bet $10 to win an additional $12 that they'll win fewer that 7.5 games.

I think that's pretty fair and realistic although I think 8-4 or 9-3 will end up being the final mark.

Looking at the schedule the Cats CAN win every game, but there are a lot that they could just as easily lose. The non-conference slate is not murderers row but does feature teams picked to win their divisions.

Even Rhode Island will require the Cats full attention to put them away by the 3rd quarter.

Rhode Island
@ Pitt
@ Marshall
Louisiana
@ Buffalo
NIU
Kent
@ Ball State
Miami
Western Michigan
@ Bowling Green
@ Akron

Until proven otherwise, I always anticipate the hiccup game.

Ending the season with back to back roadies in November is no easy task, either. Cats didn't show up the last time they were in Akron.

FWIW, Pitt lost arguably their best defensive player, Weaver, for the year today. 6.5 sacks, 14 TFL

There is one other factor, too. Ohio starts with a challenging, but not impossible OOC schedule. Pitt, Marshall, and Louisiana were all bowl teams last year. Meanwhile, Ohio has a team with a lot of new starters, particularly at WR, RB, and OL. I have no doubt there are players are all three positions who will improve as the year goes on, but the big question is, how fast of a start will Ohio have? They could go 4-0, or they could go 1-3. After a 1-3 start, 7 1/2 will be require Ohio to go 7-1 in conference.

They mentioned that in the press conference, but last year it was the Defense that was young and had to grow and this year it is the Offense. Hopefully, the Offense will catch on quick. But, the first half of the season isn't going to do them any favors in the level of competition they are going up against.

However, Solich mentioned one upside: we have 8 straight Saturday games. Also, we have a bye week before the start of MAC play to retool the team where necessary. We play at Buffalo to open MAC play where wins are traditionally hard to come by and then come home to host NIU so MAC play is going to start with two of our toughest games.

So in the end, it is up to two things: the Offense is going to have to jell as soon as it can and the Defense is going to have to carry it a bit while it is going through growing pains. How well each of those happens will determine where the season will go in my opinion. We also have a shift in coaching staff to consider don't forget so the players are going to need to get on the same page with the new coaches line of thinking as well. A lot to overcome, but the coaches keep reminding us that we have a very talented group of players so it is really hard to tell how this season will go until we start to get into it.

Ok, you got me like a fish on this one.

Im taking the over with my head held high: unless Rourke gets hurt or Hagan for a significant number of games, Ohio will win 9-10 games this year...minimum

From what I saw in the first scrimmage, I will take the over. Both sides of the ball look good. Depth in the secondary is excellent. Offense coming along faster than I expected, probably due to Rourke’s knowledge and ability. Special Teams will be the best in the MAC. I think we win 10 and the big one in Detroit. Then a bowl game to boot.

I'd say for Frank to set a school record with 11 wins is as likely than winning just 7 games. Ohio has what two seasons in the last decade under 8 wins (2013, 2014) and this year #1 QB and #1 Kicker in the MAC.

I went back and compared the Vegas over/under totals with last year. I believe they are exactly the same picks for every school.

I personally think they'll go over 7' wins. Solich and 8 wins is about as consistent as an aquarium full of beer at The Pub on a Wednesday night.

BUT ...

What if they go 1-3 to start the season then face UB on the road and NIU at home (arguably their toughest two MAC games?) ... and they drop those? Yikes! Season could go sideways really quick with a 1-5 start.

That's obviously the nuclear option ... but not one I would be cinder-block-to-the-head-stunned-to-see.

I am chiming in here with 9-11 wins.
Too much goodness with this team not to achieve double digit wins.

Yep, there are a lot of young players on offense, and in the center of the defensive line. The team should improve a lot as the year goes on, but a slow start could be a killer. All things being equal, I like a team with a strong defense. Ohio went to the MACC primarily with defense in 2006, 2009, and 2016. With their best offense yet under Solich, they didn't get to the MACC last year.

Well Ohio returns most of the unit that shutout SDSU in the bowl so I remain optimistic as defense wins championships. Here I am hoping the new DC keeps it rolling.
