If we dropped a nuke in the eye do you think it would destroy the storm?
The idea of "Nuking" a hurricane has been around for a while.
When I was an undergrad, back in the 70's, I had to take a Geophysics Class.
It was a lot of fun,if you like Calculus.
Out of 20 students on the first day, only 4 made it through.
I had to stick it out, because it was a required class.
The Professor got his PhD in Physics when he was around 21.
Worked for Bell Labs for years, before going into teaching.
"Altering" weather, like "seeding" clouds,to generate rain, and decrease snow, and "killing" hurricanes before they started, were some of of the things he talked about.
He said that, because of fallout,a "nuke" wouldn't be viable.
But,he told us that,if,when a storm is just starting to form, and if it is over
open water,a large conventional device, like they kind of explosives they
used to clear a landing area in Vietnam could, potentially, have a disruptive effect on the storm.
The idea goes back to the 50's.
So, for all we know,it may been tired.
