From The Post:

Will Evans doesn’t think Ohio’s defense has consistently been on the same page.

“I feel like there’s been times where not necessarily one guy, but maybe a whole group may not be on the same page,” the defensive end and team captain said. “That usually happens when teams score and make big runs against us, when we’re just not on the same page.”

Defensive coordinator Ron Collins, however, was unaware of the disconnect some of his players feel on the field.

“That’s the first I’ve heard that,” Collins said. “I’m not sure where we’re coming from.”

When does this defense get better? Bring back Jimmy! Something has to change or this MAC Championship fantasy will never happen. Contract year for Frank.

The defense has been giving up about 10 points a game more than I expected, given the talent returning. That's the difference between 2-4 and 4-2. Let's hope they can fix the problems soon.

This is EXTREMELY disturbing to read. How in the hell in Week 7 of the season does the DC not know that his players feel lost?!?!

That statement alone answers so many questions on why this defense is ranked:

Havoc Rating: 130/130
3rd Down Conv: 91/130
1st Downs Allowed: 90/130
Fumbles Recovered: 106/130 (2 total fumbles recovered)
Passes Intercepted: 109/130 (2 total INT)
Turnovers gained: 126/130 (4 ... only Kansas is worse at 3)
Rush Defense: 102/130 (nearly 200 yards per game)
Rush YPA: 121/130 (5.24 yards per attempt?!?!)
Total Defense: 113/130
Yards per play allowed: 117/130 (6.44 yards per play?!?!)
Tackles for loss: 125/130 (less than 4 per game)
Sacks: 107/130 (8 sacks in 6 games ... 1.33 per game)
Pass efficiency defense: 93/130

Pretty awful numbers.

And the defensive coordinator doesn't know that his players are lost.

GTFOH.

C'mon.

It's the first he's heard of it because there's so much miscommunication going on.

Some of the defensive problems are actually offensive problems. It doesn't help the defense when the offense has 19 total yards (or something like that) in the 3rd quarter vs NIU. That also contributes to not being able to stop late drives because the defense has been on the field so much.

It seems like there's a general lack of aggressiveness (the positive kind; not the stupid kind). We're tied for 126th in takeaways; 107th in sacks; 125th in tackles for loss. The defense is just not pressuring the opposition.

Perhaps the most significant loss from last year was Kylan Nelson, who was reputed to be the one on the field who called the defensive adjustments.

For those of us who like OU football but don't know the players on the defensive side (I can still name at least 25 players on the 1964 Browns), how many guys who started in 2018 are no longer on the defensive side of the ball?

Nelson at Safety, Croutch at WLB, Berger and Payne in the center of the line. Gullet started some games at SLB, particularly late in the season. So, 5 1/2 starters return. None of the players who are missing were signed to NFL contracts, though I believe Nelson had a mini-camp tryout.

By contrast, multiple players on the offensive side did sign with the NFL, including Oullette, Lowery, and White, and Irons is in the CFL. Thus, the offense lost not only more players, but players who had more interest from the NFL, yet the offense, while not as productive as last year, is making steady progress.

I appreciate the (Collins) honesty, but wow. I don't know if I would admit that so plainly.

I'm not sold on the offense's progress. 14 regulation points against buffalo 10 against Pitt. I'm counting 18 at home against ull due to the gift. Our problems run deeper than our defense.

I understand the hesitation on the offense. But I think using graduation on defense as an excuse is an easy out. I also think the offense still has the "it" factor whenever Nate goes on the field.

I think that we're spoiled a little by the phenomenal offensive numbers from the last two years. I think when the season is done, the Offense will average between 28 and 32 points a game, pretty much in the range of most years prior to the last couple. Considering the losses, that certainly is not terrible.

Defensively, so far Ohio is giving up an average of 457 yards a game. The worst year in the Solich era for the defense was 2005, when the defense gave up 452 yards/game. From 2006-2018 the defense gave up an average of 373 yards/game, though it's been a bit higher, at 383 yards/game since Ohio switched to the Cover 4. The worst year since 2005 was 2013 when the defense gave up 406 yards a game. I think the defense is capable of playing quite a bit better than they have played so far, and I hope they do, but right now the facts aren't pretty: the defense is currently on track to be the worst defense since Solich came to Ohio, and unless they dramatically improve, at the very least they will be the worst defense since 2005.

Edit - I would add that, if the defense got a few more stops, the offense would get more chances, and they might well be averaging 32-35 points a game, still not as good as the last two years, but better than all the prior ones.

If I'm remembering correctly, only 2 winning seasons since 1976.

Russ said it was three times on the radio. 2001, 2012 and something in the 80s.
