Huge game this week to see if Ohio has corrected the issues on defense related to gap integrity in the running game. Also, whether the offense has sorted out who are reliable players in the passing game and punt return team and who will come off the injury list in the backfield to play vs Buffalo.

Buffalo did a gigantic favor to Ohio last weekend by insisting Miami win that game. I think Buffalo is Ohio's main competition in the MAC East and they gave a game away there.

Buffalo's running game was pretty successful but its passing game killed them on a few series. I was surprised to see more than one play where Buffalo's Oline let a Dlineman right through to drill Buffalo's QB, resulting in turnovers.

Ohio's task could be easier or more difficult based on which Buffalo team shows up. Will it be the team who got drilled by Liberty and gave the game away against Miami or will it be the team who beat Temple?

Don's best lists Allison as out indefinitely, and Tuggle and Ross as questionable, along with Hayes. It doesn't mention Wilbon or Neatherton, but you wouldn't necessarily expect it to. Portis may be the starter, backed up by Barna, but I thought Portis looked fine.

On the Buffalo side, their Punter is out for the season, along with a WR, and their starting QB, Myers is questionable, along with a TE. Their backup QB, Vantrease, was projected to the starter before the season.

All in all, it looks like a wash on the injuries.

This is all Solich said on if any of the running backs have been ruled out:
"I don't know if that's the case. I don't know that very many have been ruled in necessarily at this point. This bye came at the right time for us. Couldn't have come at a better time for us in terms of the way that injuries all of a sudden accumulated as they did."

At the 15:20 mark of the press conference, Solich said that we should get a guy or two back at runningback. Here's hoping we get two. :)

Coach is not changing anything going into this game. Is that because we expect to be good enough to beat most Mac teams which are pretty weak?
This has been our strategy during this era which is frustrating to some.

All coaches have a philosophy, and a plan. They do change, but tend to make only minor adjustments in the middle of a season. However, for a play to work, they need all the players to execute. From one game to the next, they work on improving execution, and make minor adjustments in strategy to try to address the strengths and weaknesses of the next foe. If they want to do something radical, like totally switching defensive philosophy, they do it in the off season, as they did after, I think, the 2012 season. If they want to totally change the offensive philosophy, again, it is in the off season, as they did after the 2010 season.

Despite the loss to Fiami, the Beefs had 2 RB's with over 100 yards rushing.

Hand the ball to Patterson; hand the ball to Marks; repeat.

If we can't stop that, it's going to be a long afternoon. that simple.

Depth Chart changes:
I see that Hooks is now listed ahead of Odom, and I note that the backup to Hagan is now Michael Ballentine. Another redshirt Freshman is also on the 2-deep, Keye Thompson is listed with TJ Robinson as co-backups at WLB. That brings to 9 the number of Freshmen/Redshirt Freshmen on the 2-deep:

True Freshmen:
Kurtis Rourke - co backup at QB
Parker Titsworth - backup C

Redshirt Freshmen:
Joe Mishler - co backup at QB
Shane Hooks - starter at WR-X
Jerome Buckner - starter at WR-F
Tyler Walton - backup at WR-F
Kurt Danneker - backup LG
Jeremiah Wood - backup SLB
Keye Thompson - co backup WLB

There are also 10 Sophomores on the 2-deep, as well as 19 Juniors and 10 Seniors. That adds up to 48 instead of 44 because there are four positions with co-backups.

Put up or shut up week for me. Rourke and Dylan Conner said all the right things in Arkley article this week in the Messenger. First games offered disappointment, but real games start now ... yada, yada, yada.

I agreed with all of it.

But Saturday will be the true test of whether they can back the talk?

Is this the prohibitive MAC East favorite everyone thought they are?

Can the offense show some consistency despite some injuries at RB?

Can the defense do the same? Can they find a way to stop the run? This defense has been underwhelming to start the season thru four games. Havoc rating of 125 out of 130. That has to change. (Havoc rate is calculated by tallying the total number of tackles for loss, passes defensed (interceptions and breakups), and forced fumbles and dividing it by total plays.)

Defense rounded into form as season wore on last year. They have to do the same starting this week.

A loss at UB and Ohio is behind the 8-ball early in conference season especially with NIU on deck.

I think they're better than UB ... as does Vegas. But a decade of doom in upstate NY needs to be erased to prove it on the field.

Should be an interesting game. I think Ohio will be ready ... just hoping they can execute on the field where it counts.

Good luck to the Bobcats against Buffalo today. Your team is better than you think. Nobody likes losses, but all three of yours have been to quality teams.

The Cajun Nation is pulling for you.

I will never understand why when you are inside the 2 with a 1st and goal you don't have QB up under center. Anyone could get the necessary yard or two in 4 tries.

I don't know if it's personnel or scheme, but Ohio's front seven on defense is being manhandled. And we're on game five.
