He is rated the number 1 Canadian back, he is still getting his weight back up after losing 20 pounds. https://3downnation.com/2019/03/29/canadian-rb-maleek-iro... /

That gives his pro day results:
40: 4.59 - would have been 16th at the combine, of 23 that ran
Bench: 18 reps - would have been 17th of 26 that lifted
Vertical: 33.5 - would have been 15th of 24 that jumped mil
Broad jump: 9'11" - would have been 14th of 23 that jumped
3 Cone: 7.20 - would have been 10th of 16 that ran
20 yd shuttle: 4.21 - would have been 4th of 16 that ran

It's a solid Pro-Day that shows he is competitive with the backs who are projected to be drafted. He seems likely to get a shot at the CFL. As for the NFL, he might get a UFA, and seems likely to get at least a mini-camp invite. As far as prior Ohio running backs, Garrett played some in the CFL, and a number of others got mini-camp invites. Blankenship did earn a UFA, but didn't make the cut come Fall camp.

Most rankings I've seen have shown Irons as a top 10 prospect for the CFL Draft, which is May 2.

I don't know how far the #1 Ranked RB has to move up in the CFL Draft but I expect Maleek to get several calls from NFL teams

thx for the info on Maleek.

as for the canadian football league, i'll give a little background. not sure everything i say will be 100% correct, but it'll approx. right.

you must have 7 canadian starters out of 24. i believe you must specify those 7 starters as O or D. so if a canadian starter gets injured, you must replace him with canadian, or swap a position within that unit (swapping canadian starter is obviously quite tough)

of the 7 canadian starters, historically, it's gone 3 in the interior of offensive line, 2 as WR (5 WR total) and the deep safety (5 defensive backs).... so that leaves one other position as canadian... and that has completely varied. alot of teams have a 3rd WR as canadian or an internal D-lineman. there is a trend towards TB as canadian, where Maleek would fit.

canadians who can play an american position are gold but have one major drawback. you need a decent backup to that canadian and that is much harder. so committing to canadian at a non-traditional position is a big big decision. but the best teams do it well.

i would think one maleek drawback for CFL or NFL is pass catching from backfield. of course, one maleek advantage is that i don't think the pro day numbers really capture maleek's unique combo of size, speed and strength.

anyway, by far offensive linemen are the most coveted position in CFL draft. then WR... then a bunch of positions.

lastly, big change in cfl draft. you used to have to have canadian football pedigree to be judged canadian. they changed it to being born in canada is enough (lots of kids of american CFL players from the past)

surprised Maleek doesn't seem to have signed.

wonder if his legal problems affect his ability to get work permit (not that i think he'd need that for rookie mini-camp.. but teams might be leery)

He's got a pretty certain career ahead of him in the CFL. He might not have been that interested in giving such a long shot attempt at the NFL a try.

Plus their draft is tomorrow - no harm to delay - his stock also goes up if he commits to CFL.

The most recent CFL mock draft has Irons going with the 7th pick of the 2nd round (#15 overall) to Saskatchewan.

if anyone cares, it's on right now (8pm thursday eastern time)....

Maleek mocks in first or second round. i had mentioned earlier that unless you are interior OL or WR/slotback teams have to commit to your position as canadian for them to take you very high in draft.

Maleek not wanting to do NFL rookie camp might be correct. Kongbo from Tennessee didn't sign either even though there'd be significant NFL for him (he is rehabbing injury right now)... 9 canadians signed with NFL. i think 8 are rookie mini-camp. so probably most will be in CFL this season.

one last CFL draft difference vs. NFL is that canadian players will fall in CFL draft if they have alot of NFL interest. idea is they'll never play in CFL.

EDIT: i should say Maleek mostly mocks in 2nd round. but i have seen him in first round... i have seen Maleek go to sask, winnipeg, toronto. all teams that might commit to canadian TB (although toronto has james wilder from FSU who is stud)

i believe there is a new CFL team in this year's draft. Halifax,Nova Scotia. at least there is a logo i don't recognize.

i have a feeling that a new team going with a canadian TB would be smart as they may have issues filling tradtional canadian positions properly in such short a time. so they might have to go with american guard or center.

one more pick in round 1 who won't take maleek... so round 2

Hamilton Tiger-Cats. That the same team that a former Toledo QB played for a number of years ago. He was real star. I'm drawing a blank on the name. Can anyone help me out?

The Bobcats haven't had a lot of players from Canada. Only Canadian citizens are eligible for the CFL draft.

something good for Nathan Rourke. a canadian qb taken in 3rd round. former psu qb (think he was top 5 or top 10 QB out of IMG Academy).... no idea whether Nathan would have shot at NFL. great running but the NFL doesn't seem to care about that.
