Well I am glad we won, Nathan looked great, though we have some noticeable problems to fix, and it was Kent State after all. Yet, I felt like my victory parade got rained on for the following reasons.
A couple of neighborhood kids were in and out of the house during the first half, one of them said something to the effect of, "What game is this? No one is there and production looks pretty low budget." Thinking someone had changed the channel I came in from the kitchen to see crowd shots of a half empty stadium and a replay that looked like something from the Spectrum High School game of the week. Adding insult to injury, one of the neighbors stopped by to talk to my wife in the second half and after my wife reminded her that I was an alum the neighbor saw some stadium shots and said, "My sister's kids go there and they say everyone leaves after watching the band at half time. What division is this, it isn't the same as Ohio State is it?" I did my best to keep calm and politely explain college football conferences, divisions etc.
I have explained on more than a few posts that I went to every game in my student days and it was a very low point for Bobcat football. This was the mid and late 80s, and my roommate and I would count how many fans were left after half time. Sadly, it often didn't take long.
After dealing with all of that when Coach Solich was hired and we had our inaugural game victory against Pitt, I thought the sky was the limit. We were going to be on ESPN, and social media was going to help promote our brand, and boards like this was a way to forward that excitement. While our board numbers are down, other schools message boards, attendance and promotion are way down. I am about as optimistic as they come. However after where we had been, I guess I hoped for more than just coming from behind to beat a so so Kent State before a lackluster crowd, which featured a TV production quality one might expect from your local cable access channel.
