. The Offensive side had a growl today, the Defensive side: well, a simple meow.
More like a whimper. Sad, but not totally unexpected. Are we feeling the effect of Burrow leaving?

We're feeling the effects of poor recruiting and apparently ineffective strength training.

Homecoming 4th quarter MACTION--both offenses wide open.

Worst play was after 3 and out a 5 yard penalty occurs and then ALL, I repeat ALL 10 Bobcats
forget to block and it appeared 5 different NIU guys could have blocked that punt.
There never should have been a blocked punt BECAUSE WE SHOULD HAVE GONE FOR IT ON 4TH AND 2!!!!!!! You tell me Rourke cant get 1 1/2 yds!!! Vanilla Frank rides again.
Go for it on 4th and 2 from inside our own 30 on the first drive of the game. Hilarious.
Yep. That is pretty hilarious for sure.

I'm more pissed about the play call on the late 3rd quarter 4th & 2 where Rourke aired out a deep ball. What was that??? No RPO or TE screen? Something short and quick. Convert & score on that drive and maybe the result is different. Terrible play calling in a key moment.

I’ll probably catch hell from some of you guys on here for this but I believe the only problem with Frank right now is his coordinators. I believe the team has the talent, it’s just that they are being poorly used. With that being said, Frankie needs to start telling Ron and Tim “ If you guys can’t get it done, don’t be mad if you find a pink slip on your desk.” The offense had to replace a lot of great players but there’s no excuse for the defense. I’ve watched small high school teams tackle better and have better coverage on passes.

Yeah, those small high school teams were covering small high school kids and tackling small high school kids. Little over dramatic this morning.

Prevent defense.

Prevents you from winning.

Improvement? Or lesser competition? The East is atrocious, the West is not much better. This team did not wake up over night and become magically better! What they did do is continue to give great effort, work hard and play against players who were simply not better than them.

Any thoughts as to why Solich called the Buffalo game "a tremendously satisfying win", and said that among the wins in his career, "this one ranks up there"?
Sure, look at his record in Buffalo! Buffalo has been a graveyard for some pretty good Bobcat teams. Also, seeing his team rebound from the 1-3 start every coach is going to worry about the response, and a gutty win is always satisfying. Nothing but positive came out of Saturday. But let's be honest, its not like beating Buffalo was a huge upset, Ohio was the favorite, pre-season favorite, power rankings favorite, etc,. However, still nice to walk out of there with a win.
I think Ohio was picked to win the MAC primarily for 1 reason-we had Nathan Rourke. Unfortunately football is a team sport and the replacements for the many seniors we lost are still learning. Hopefully the team can come together and Ohio will end up as the best team. Only time will tell.
+1.

Other factors may be that:

Replacement players for last years studs haven’t stepped up.

Other teams have improved.

We have a target in on OUr back since we were picked #1.

At least they are able to defend the other team that is the same size seems how our defense can’t do that very well.

I agree but on offense I am sad that Frank is doing what he always does in that he has no Tuggle against NIU but stays with Ross. Then he keeps going with Odom over Hooks.

You do realize, I presume, that Tuggle is out with an injury? It appeared to me that Hooks played at least as much time as Odom. I do agree with you that Hooks should start, though, as he catches the ball a much higher percentage of the times he is targeted.

Did we win? What happened when we did not go for it? You can laugh but you never know. And once again I say: what do we have to lose? We have won ZERO MAC titles under Frank. So keep chuckling and enjoy our 5-7 season.

I'm more pissed about the play call on the late 3rd quarter 4th & 2 where Rourke aired out a deep ball. What was that??? No RPO or TE screen? Something short and quick. Convert & score on that drive and maybe the result is different. Terrible play calling in a key moment.
Exactly. It likely wound up being the key to the game. Even no score and burn off two minutes and maybe there is no time for NIU to score 3 and you go OT.

It was also tight man-2-man and nicely broken up by the talented defender--Rourke must have thought he was back in practice.

Side note--both teams should bag the screen pass. It looked like Keystone Cops trying to run the two I noticed, one from each team. I even think Rourke's ball banged someone in the head. By the way, hitting one of your guys in the head, is that considered hazing?

No, but it should've been illegal touching (which, like hazing, also can get you suspended). The guy he hit was a lineman.

Not sure what was worse:

1) The way the second half of the game played out on Saturday

2) That it totally didn't surprise me and I all but assumed it would happen seeing the back and forth of the game

After the highs and lows of 2012 I just expect any Ohio Football team to have it's bright spots but fall short in the end of anything significant. Bowl appearances are not nearly the accomplishment they were a generation ago.

4-8 or maybe 5-7 seems to be the reality this season is facing.

Hope these coordinators are better at recruiting than in game strategy and adjustments.

51 years and counting.

As a comparison: Last night, UCLA (visitor) was ahead of Stanford at the half 21-10, with Stanford's td coming on a blocked punt. UCLA held the lead, went on to win 34-16.

By contrast, leading 21-10 at the half last week with NIU's only td coming on a blocked punt, Ohio, well ......

For a similarity to the MAC, the camera shots of the stands with about 8 minutes to go in the game showed almost no one (no exaggeration) in the stands at Stanford.
