Allison runs like a bull to take us down the field on the opening drive and has the ball stripped while fighting for the end zone. Never sees the field again.

Julian Ross, who openly avoids contact and runs east to west rather than north to south - and who makes an inexcusable mistake to end the first half - gets more carries when the game is on the line.

Unless Allison was hurt, I don't understand this at all. And it hurt us.

Frank explained it in the presser, you can’t fumble. Frank keeps talking Ross’s speed and the announcers even mentioned it, so apparently that’s one reason why he plays as much as he does.

It was exactly that kind of philosophy that resulted in AJ ever seeing the field in the first place.

If you're a running back in Frank's offense and you fumble, you better make friends with the bench.

BINGO! And Frank has been consistent in this philosophy and expectations his entire career.

And the won/loss and conference results have been consistent - so Frank's got that going for him.

Good thing Frank didn't ask for an opportunity to redeem himself after his "fumble" behind the wheel of a car some 14 years ago.

I think Allison may be the best blocker in pass protection of all the running backs. I think he was missed in that regard.

Did Rourke not fumble? Why didn't he get benched? This is a totally ignorant rule or decision whatever you want to call it from Frank. I don't know the back story of maybe Allison having an attitude or anything else but if he was benched for ONE fumble after carrying the team down the field, Frank is ignorant. He let Daz Patterson, Dorian Brown and a host of other guys fumble left and right before finally benching them for others. Heck, AJ only played late in the Kent game in his debut because Frank had a long leash on his other THREE backs. If Allison is the main back in that game we win by two scores. Instead we get Julian Ross who is now the third back in my mind, running out of bounds and we get Tuggle being played inconsistently even though he's a scoring machine. You Frank defenders need to get a grip because he's lost his.

I'm not saying I agree with the decision to bench allison, but there's a big deference between a tailback fumbling and a qb getting hit on the blind side just before he throws the ball. Not the same ballpark.

Allison has fumbled three times this year. He's the only running back on the team that has fumbled at all (none for Ross or Tuggle in their Ohio careers). He's clearly gotten a second and third chance, and I'm sure he'll get another, but so far, he's not gotten the message. He was in the open field and lost the ball from a hit by a defender he knew was coming. Rourke lost a fumble because he got blasted when the offensive line didn't block. It's a big difference. That's on the offensive line. Allison's fumble is on him. It was pretty big too, one of the key reasons Ohio lost. Hopefully from now on, he'll make it a point to hold onto the ball because he probably is the team's best overall running back.

Agree completely with this. He's a hard runner and could be an AJ-like back given another year in the weight room. However, you could feel it in the stadium as soon as it happened that it was going to come back and bite us. It shouldn't be too hard to teach an FBS running back that, when you're fighting for extra yards, you HAVE to protect the football. I'm guessing that is a huge part of Solich's frustration with him.

On the Rourke fumble, I couldn't see who's man got to him, but if it was a blind side hit, then that's a recurring problem with the left side of the OL.

Rourke's fumble was a blind side sack, that he had no control over. The pressure came quick from his back side, and got his arm as it was being cocked to the throwing motion. If you are going to bench anyone, should be your protection. I've complained about Rourke and ball security from day 1, saying that is an area he must improve on, and he has to this point. But that turnover is not on him.

Benching running backs seems to be game by game under Frank and not permanent unless you consistently fumble. As I remember in that Kent game, Brown, Patterson, and Edmond each lost a fumble. One of them got a second chance and fumbled again. I'm sure Frank was not planning on using AJ as a back in that game, but it ended well enough.

A guy who we could use in the game is Neatherton. He was out in the spring with a back injury, but I don't think he's played since. Anyone closer to the team know how the young man's doing?

Maybe not the fastest or most talented back on the roster, but works and runs hard and takes care of the ball. Like someone else who played for us...

Hopefully, we can engineer a blow-out against Akron and give as many people who have not had reps this year some playing time as possible.
