According to AP's Ralph Russo, a lower percentage of college football recruits come from Ohio than six years ago. He mentioned a slow growth rate of population overall and a 28% drop in the number of kids playing high school football in Ohio. He also says the hotbed for Ohio high school football has shifted from Cleveland to Columbus.

This is what I told the guys on the recruiting board that NE Ohio isn't the cradle of recruiting like it was. Of course Alan will tell you we need to "fear the roo" with all that backyard talent Akron has. Ohio can attract players across the state and I think that is more of an advantage.

I have noticed this in the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley area recently. Fewer Division 1 prospects and only a few playoff caliber teams this season. This area is historically rich in prospects and coaches. I think it is aging population, and fewer students going out for football due to injury concerns.

The Valley is not what it once was, in many different respects. Columbus is the nations 13th largest city and the suburban schools are becoming dominate. Not to mention Columbus has the strongest economy of Ohio's Big 3 cities.
