I realize the passing game was not on and we needed to run the ball. But hey how about we do a little misdirection? Dive right, dive left, dive left, dive right. Not nearly enough play-action, motion, etc. I know this offense has that in them, I've seen it as recent as the previous game. What the hell happened?
Use of motion is a game plan thing, depending on what the defense is doing, motion can be nothing more than making your back or WR run more than they need too. To motion for the sake of motioning is silly and unnecessary, motioning to gain an advantage off what is occurring on the field is when you need motion. Miami simply did not give us anything that motion could really exploit.
But what was missing last night was any kind of misdirection play. No passes off run fakes (either where Rourke fakes into the line or gets a tossback from the RB) that usually gets Rourke a little time to throw. Just one reverse that didn't work, but that's no reason to lock up the playbook. Play selection was very vanilla. I've been waiting for the play where Buckner scored a TD against Kent where we have three WRs grouped together. The first one through goes left, the second goes right and the third straight down the middle. Haven't seen it since that game.
There were several misdirection plays last night, sever Counters off the read option with two lead blockers for the QB, you had the reverse. Heck the read option itself is often a misdirection play. The spread is NOT the Wing-T, you are not always aligned every play for misdirection. That's just not in the college game anymore.
As for the play at Kent, again that is a coverage/scheme type play/situation, and that was simply not there.
As for play-action, there was quite a bit of play action last night, but DB's don't really have to worry about PA when the D front is kicking the O-Line's ass. As for calling for flea-flickers, those are NOT every game plays, and are again situational, if you have DB's taking bites on the run hard, sure give it a try, but when they are playing pass 1st and the pocket is getting collapsed, that is not a play you want to run.
