Article before the game:

Post game interview:
https://www.argonauts.ca/2019/10/26/post-game-aj-ouellett... /

OUellette had 11 carries for 69 yards in the game, plus he was targeted 6 times, and caught 5 for 39 yards, 27 of the yards were after the catch.
https://www.cfl.ca/games/2636/#/boxscore

Irons didn't have a bad day, either, with 10 carries for 43 yards.
https://www.footballdb.com/games/boxscore.html?gid=201910...

Hamiton is 14-3 year year, with the best record in the CFL, so Irons will see post-season play. Toronto is 4-13, so they are done for the year after their final game next week, which will be against Hamilton. So, on next Saturday, at 7PM Eastern, you will have AJ on one side, Maleek on the other.

A question for people who follow professional football more than I do: Is there any likelihood that if either Irons or AJ have really outstanding performances in the CFL that they get a second look by the NFL?

I don’t think there is much movement from the CFL to the NFL. (Also, life in the CFL isn’t bad from what I’ve read. I wish them both long careers in the CFL

Doug Flutie is the only CFL-to-NFL player who immediately comes to mind, but I'm sure there were others. I think there's more movement from the NFL to the CFL.

I think it's great that both Maleek and AJ have gone on to pro careers, and in a league that gets more respect than arena football or the XFL-type leagues. They also continue the run (pun intended) of Ohio players in the CFL now that Chip Cox isn't on somebody's roster.

He was probably the best, but Joe Theismann was pretty good as well. There’s a lot of shorter term wonders, so you never know.

a few quarterbacks but hardly ever at running back. the CFL game is not structured to highlight the running game.

Joe Kapp
I had forgotten about Kapp. Your mention of him reminded me about an incident I read about a while back involving him and an old CFL rival, Angelo Mosca. Apparently some years ago they got into a bizarre physical confrontation at a CFL luncheon. Both were in their early/mid 70s. If anyone is so inclined they can google their names and read about it. Old feelings can linger a long time.

Was there a Bobcat in the CFL in the early 70s? I seem to recall a gentleman at a happy hour (we are talking some 20 years ago) regaling our group with a story about playing a couple of years in the CFL? He told an amusing story about being dropped off at a dentist's office somewhere in Saskatchewan as the team bus was heading back to Winnipeg. It seems his mouth was swelling up due to an infection. The team brought him back via a pick-up truck the next day. He jokingly said at that point he knew he needed to re-evaluate his career path. I came in on the story and someone in our party said he played for he Bobcats in the late 60s and early 70s, but I was never able to confirm that part of the story. With this CFL discussion, the whole thing came back to me and I was wondering if anyone might know who that might be?

Scanning the media guide for possibilities:
Bob Houmard - Fullback; Winnipeg Blue Bombers (CFL); Ottawa Rough Riders (CFL),1969-73

Joe Callan - Defensive Back; Ottawa Roughriders (CFL), 1979

Chuck Turner - Tackle; Buffalo Bills, 1966; Winnipeg Blue
Bombers (CFL); Hamilton Tiger Cats (CFL)

Thanks Ted, Bob Hournard might fit the bill, but looking at his CFL playing cards online the longer hair of that era can throw you off. Interesting to see those old CFL cards online. I vaguely remember as a kid seeing some CFL games on CBC, which I believe was available on our town's CATV package, which consisted of the three Columbus stations, the three Toledo stations, the the three Cleveland network stations, along with WUAB. For some families it was quite the debate, as to whether you got free TV with your antennae, or spent the whopping $25 a year with the CATV package to make sure you got a clearer picture.

Whatever the case, playing pro ball back in those days wasn't for the faint of heart. The pay in the NFL in the early 70's was pretty paltry, let alone the CFL. Talk about basic travel plans, long bus trips in the Canadian prairies was hardly glamorous by today's standards. Personally, I am sort of a back roads, scenic drive type of guy, but I am guessing the long bus trip to play the Saskatchewan Rough Riders or the Calgary Stampeders from Winnipeg was hardly exciting to most players.

Whoever it was, if would be great if AJ and Nathan played with or against each other next year. Unless of course, one or both find their way into the NFL. While there are some big time contracts, I believe the average CFL salary is near the NFL's minimum salary.

I hope you are not serious with that guess? Irons is making less than the average teacher salary at a suburban Columbus school district.

The CFL salary cap it 5.7 Million and they have a 46 man roster. Most all rookies make the CFL minimum of $64K, and usually carry a $15k signing bonus. Simple math tells us that if every player was paid equally on a team that the salary would be $123K. An NFL rookie minimum salary at the same time is $495K.

You gotta love Billy's subtlety. I mean what kind of time does he have on his hand that he regale us with CFL salary cap info? Maybe he's the smartest man in Ohio. Who knew?

Or maybe he has friends involved with the CFL, NFL and NCAA Football. I simply met your post (presented as a rough idea), with facts of the economics. Figure in the taxiation, and first year guys do not make tons of cash in the CFL, nor does the average player.

Billy I love facts and figures too, but using them with a hammer is a bit much. The reason Cliff Clavin was sort of a likable sort of character was that he did it in such a disarming way.

The Browns running backs coach loved AJ. AJ needs to improve his vision and speed, he definitely has NFL ability.

You do not “improve your vision” or speed at this level, you have that feel for the hole or the speed to hit it by now or you do not. Remember AJ’s speed in college, his posted times are on the low end. You are not improving much on that. It’s more about opportunity and style.

I’m sorry, but when your guess is off that far, it deserves a chuckle. Opinions are one thing, but being just flat out that far off, well that’s another.

But again, congrats to AJ on his 1st TD

You can't make this stuff up. Honestly Billy do you really think that off the top of their head, the average NFL dialed in fan knows that the average CFL player doesn't make the NFL minimum? I mean if you go to an NFL stadium tailgate and start chucking at guys who don't know that depending upon the level of alcohol consumed, it might not be best idea you had that week.
